A three-year letterman in track under legendary CU head coach Frank Potts, he would replace his mentor as coach of Colorado’s cross country and track teams in 1968 when Potts retired after 41 seasons ... Meyers would coach the Buffaloes for seven seasons, 1968-75 ... As an athlete, Meyers was a two-time NCAA outdoor champion, winning the long jump as a junior in 1961 (25-0) and the pole vault as a senior in 1962 (15-3), thus garnering All-America honors on both occasions ... A four-time Big 8 Conference champion in the long jump, winning the indoor and outdoor versions in both 1960 and 1961 ... After graduating, he worked one year as an assistant to Potts ... On Dec. 20, 1962 at the University of Chicago Holiday Festival, he became just the fifth person to clear 16 feet in the pole vault, as his 16-1¼ effort was the “unofficial” world indoor record (at the time, indoor marks weren’t tracked) ... His personal best came outdoors the following summer when he cleared 16-9 ... As a coach, his CU cross country teams reached the NCAA Championships four times, finishing fifth in 1968, 15th in 1970, 26th in 1971 and sixth in 1973 ... Six of his seven indoor track teams posted finishes at the NCAA’s, including CU’s best ever effort, second place in 1974 (losing the national championship to UTEP by a single point).  The Buffs tied for fourth in 1971 and had two other top 15 placements (14th in ’72, 15th in ’73) ... His outdoor teams had four top 20 finishes at the NCAA Outdoor meet: 14th (1970), 19th (1971), 13th (1973) and 12th (1974) ... He coached two NCAA individual champs (Marcus Walker in the hurdles, Kingsley Adams in the long jump) ... Top finishes in the Big 8 included two runner-up finishes indoors (1971, 1972) and a third outdoors (1974) ... Twenty-four of his athletes were Big 8 individual champions (11 indoors, 13 outdoors) ... He was the 1972 District 7 Coach of the Year ... He left coaching after the 1974-75 academic year to enter private business ... Earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from CU in Physical Education ... Spent three years as head track coach at Colorado State before returning to Boulder ... A native of Colorado Springs and graduate of Palmer High, he was a three-time state high school champion (twice in the long jump, once in the pole vault).
