April 29, 2004 | Tennis
NORMAN, Okla. ? The University of Colorado women's tennis team received straight set wins from Kendra Strandemo, Jessica Vanderdys and Martina Sedivec, in addition claimed the doubles point, as the fifth seeded Buffaloes cruised to a 4-0 win over 12th seeded Iowa State, Friday morning at the Big 12 Tournament hosted by the University of Oklahoma.
With the win, CU advances to the quarterfinals to take on No. 4 seed and 41st nationally ranked Baylor (12-10), Friday, April 30 at 11 a.m.
CU, ranked No. 69 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) improves to 12-9, while the Cyclones end the season at 5-14 and remain winless in its last 33 consecutive conference matches dating back to March 2002.
The Buffaloes started the morning competition taking two of the three doubles points for a 1-0 advantage. The newly formed duo of Martina Sedivec and Jessica Vanderdys took an 8-5 winner at No. 2. It's only the second time this spring the two have teamed up to play with one another since winning an 8-3 match back on April 23 against Colorado State.
CU closed the doubles portion with Lynzee Kever and Jenny Hanson remaining unbeaten at No. 3 (4-0) taking an 8-4 win.
In singles, CU kept the momentum in their favor receiving singles wins from Vanderdys, Sedivec, and Strandemo. In fact, all three have combined for an 11-1 record since the last time the Buffaloes played at Iowa State back on April 16, and all three defeated their ISU opponent the last time they faced one another back in Ames.
Vanderdys won her 20th match of the season and has won three of her last four, taking a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Eve Soriano at No. 2; Sedivec won her fourth in a row at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Beth Chermel; and Strandemo also won her fourth in a row and eight of her last nine clinching the team point with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Jill Palen.
Up next is fourth seeded Baylor, an opponent the Buffs lost to in the regular season, 5-2 back on March 27. However, CU upset the Bears at last year's Big 12 Conference Tournament when Baylor was the top seed. CU also became the first eighth seed or higher to defeat a team fourth or higher since the conference's then-seven year history.

On Kendra clinching the match:
“She has been a tough player for us all season. If we have to be in this situation, she's one player I want on the court every time in that situation.”
On clinching the match:
“It's awesome. I love it. I love being out there and seeing everyone in the stands. Knowing my score and seeing that others (CU players) were down but if I win the next point, we win the match. It's an awesome feeling. Now we advance to play Baylor tomorrow.”
“
“I think we came out really strong. We felt like we could beat them. The last time we played, we had really close matches. I won and two of the other matches were supersetters. And, one was decided on the second set. So, we knew we could beat those guys.”
