February 26, 2005 | Tennis
COLUMBIA, Mo. ? The University of Missouri women's tennis team secured the all important doubles point at the start of the match and proved to be the difference upsetting No. 46 Colorado, 4-3, at home Saturday afternoon.
The No. 46 national ranking for CU was the highest since the 1998-99 season when the Buffaloes finished at No. 32 spot. Mizzou (7-2, 2-1) won for only the second time in 22 meetings against CU, two in the last three years, both in Columbia.
It was also CU's second loss in sixth straight 4-3 decisions.
Kendra Strandemo, Veera Nurmi and Martina Sedivec all won points for CU.
Strandemo improved to 5-0 at No. 2 singles taking a straight set winner. It was her eighth win in nine outings this dual season and her 67th career; Nurmi won her seventh in nine matches in two sets; and Sedivec won her sixth of the spring, also in two sets.
In doubles, Strandemo and Jessica Vanderdys defended their No. 49 national ranking winning their opening match of the spring, 9-7 at No. 1 doubles.
Colorado (6-3, 1-1 Big 12) looks to get back to its winning ways this week hosting Baylor, March 5 at the Harvest House, and New Mexico, March 6 at the Ranch Country Club in Westminster.
