Women's Tennis Falls 4-3 to Kansas At Big 12 Championships

April 27, 2006 | Tennis

WACO, Texas ? The University of Colorado women's tennis season came to an end Thursday night falling to No. 8 seed Kansas, 4-3 in the first round of the Big 12 Tennis Championships, at the Baylor Tennis Center hosted by the University of Baylor.

KU (14-10) rallied from a 3-1 deficit with four singles wins to defeat Colorado for the second time in as many weeks. The Jayhawks defeated the Buffaloes, 4-3 back on April 15, by the same score.

Colorado, ranked nationally at No. 53 ends the season at 10-10, while No. 64 KU advances to Friday's quarterfinal match up with top seed and No. 5 Baylor (22-3).

“We were pretty evenly matched,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “It is disappointing, definitely disappointing. But it was a great opportunity to come out and play. Our players gave it all they had.”

Senior Jessica Vanderdys moved up in the CU record book winning her 72nd career singles match taking a straight set winner over Ksenia Bukina 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 position. Vanderdys moves into 11th place on the all-time victories list. It's also Vanderdys' 21st victory of the year, a personnel best for wins in a year.

Sophomore Veera Nurmi picked up the other singles tally defeating Lauren Hommell 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4 singles. Nurmi wins her 22nd singles match of the year, a team high for the Buffs this season.

Colorado managed their other tally taking two of three doubles points.

Vanderdys and Gleisy Torres Torres won their eighth match in 11 outings defeating Ksenia Bukina/Elizaveta Avdeeva, 8-6; and at No. 2 doubles, Franziska Jendrian and Monica Milewski defeated Lauren Hommell/Edina Horvath, 8-6 for their sixth victory in nine tries.

Vanderdys also moved into second place on the all-time doubles list with 66 victories.

The CU/KU match up was the fifth time between the two schools in the conference post-season with the Buffs holding a 3-2 advantage. CU won the head-to-head match up at last year's event, and again in 2003 and 1998. KU won today and in 1997.
