No. 56 Buffaloes Tennis Team Upsets No. 34 Arizona, 6-1

January 26, 2007 | Tennis

BOULDER ? The University of Colorado tennis team won its second straight match on the season and upset No. 34 Arizona, 6-1, Friday night at the Harvest House. The Buffaloes improve to 2-0, while the Wildcats fall to 1-1.

The win over the No. 34 ranked Wildcats is CU's first over a ranked school in the top-35 since the 2002-03 season when the Buffaloes defeated three opponents (No. 24 Oklahoma No. 32 Wisconsin, No. 34 Oregon). The 2002-03 season was also CU's last NCAA Tournament team.

CU jumped ahead early securing the doubles portion winning two of three points.

Helping the cause was Franziska Jendrian and Monica Milewski winning a close 8-6 match at No. 2. The doubles match was clinched at No. 3 by Victoria Almagno and Melisa Esposito, 9-8 (5).

It was Almagno/Esposito's second collegiate match playing together, first time this dual season.

With a 1-0 lead, CU kept its momentum in check reeling off five of the next six singles slots.

Belassi won her fifth straight match dating back to the fall season sweeping Juliette Mavroleon 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

Arizona narrowed its deficit to 2-1 by taking the No. 3 slot in three sets.

With the match score 2-1, the Buffaloes made it 3-1 behind No. 36 Monica Milewski defeating Danielle Steinberg 6-3, 6-4 at the top singles position, then Jendrian clinched the CU triumph at No. 4 defeating Natalia Toporowska 7-6(5), 6-1.

Milewski won her 11th of the year, while Jendrian won her ninth.

The home team rounded out the team scoring as Esposito edged Camelia Todorova 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 6, and Gleisy Torres Torres defeated Tina Razloznik 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 5.

Torres Torres and Esposito won their 11th and fourth matches, respectively.

“It was a great team effort at all nine positions,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “The team stayed positive and played aggressive throughout the singles and doubles matches.”

CU takes to the road to play a pair of SEC schools next week traveling to Mississippi State (Feb. 2) and Alabama (Feb. 3).
