Missouri-Colorado Notes

October 25, 2008 | Football

Quickly The 34 points CU allowed in the first half were the most since game 12 last season, when the Buffs trailed Nebraska, 35-24, before rallying for a 65-51 win ... The 34 point halftime deficit was the most CU faced since the 2005 Big 12 championship game when the Buffs trailed Texas, 42-3 ... CU committed a season low 1 turnover in the game (but coming in the second quarter, the 9th of CU's 15 on the year that occurred in that stanza) ... WR Patrick Williams (3-28) moved from 13th into 12th in all-time receptions at CU (95; he passed D.J. Hackett who had 93 in 2000-03); he is now tied with James Kidd for 21st in yards (944) ... The 142 combined plays in the game marked the seventh straight game that CU has played where the final count was between 141 and 146 ... CU's 199 yards on offense were the fewest since having 196 against the Tigers last year ... Missouri's 491 yards were a season high against the Buffaloes, topping Texas' 431; only three of eight foes have reached the 400 mark versus CU ... Missouri's offense isn't one that needs much help, but the Tigers seven TD drives on average started at the CU 48 (the average of their 13 was the MU 43) ... This was the third time in the last four games that CU and its opponent committed six or fewer penalties (CU had 4, MU 2). CU now has just 45 penalties in eight games this season, the Buffs committed at least 80 in the previous 15 years all but one time, Dan Hawkiss first year when it had just 63 ... Three teams who played in “I-70” stadiums scored at least 50 points today: Missouri (58-0 over Colorado), Oklahoma (58-35 over Kansas State in Manhattan) and Texas Tech (63-21 over Kansas in Lawrence) ... CU's next two opponents, Texas A&M and Iowa State, met tonight in Ames with A&M winning, 49-35.

THE RUN ENDS AT 242. Washington State's scoring streak ended last week at USC (280 games), and Colorado's came to a close tonight at 242, ending the third longest active streak in the nation (though there sure appeared to be time for one more play from the Missouri 9 when the ball was spiked and the clock kept running).  The 242-game streak was the ninth longest of all-time and covered nearly 20 years; CU was last shutout at Nebraska (7-0) on Nov. 12, 1988.  This was the worst shutout loss since a 59-0 setback at Nebraska on Oct. 10, 1981.

THE RANKED ON THE ROAD  Colorado is now 1-16 on the road against ranked conference opponents since the Big 12 began play in 1996; the one win was at Kansas State on Oct. 6, 2001.  CU lost its first seven, won at KSU, and has dropped nine since that win.  Overall, CU has now dropped 11 straight road games versus ranked foes (does not include neutral sites); CU's last win over a ranked team in its own stadium was on Sept. 21, 2002 when the Buffs beat UCLA 31-17 at the Rose Bowl.

QB TYLER HANSEN (16-12-0, 72, 0 TD; 16-30 RUSH) Hansen became just the fifth true freshman to start a game at quarterback in CU history.  Here's how he compared with the four before him:

QB BREAKDOWN  Here is the breakdown of tonight's snaps by each CU quarterback:

Quarterback      Drives   Plays    Yards    Avg.      Points   TO

Tyler Hansen     9          45         130       2.9        0          0

Cody Hawkins   4          24         69         2.9        0          1

Hawkins (9-of-17, 86 yards) moved past Darian Hagan (3.801 yards) into seventh place in all-time passing yards as Colorado with 3,830.  He also passed John Hessler (627 attempts) into fourth all-time with 650.

WR JOSH SMITH (4-36 REC, 7-154 KOR)  His 190 all-purpose yards upped his total to 1,312 for the year, with his 154 via kickoff returning giving him 977 of those yards on returns?a CU single season record.  He has 777 kickoff return yards and 200 punt return yards for the 977, which breaks the previous CU record in a season of 953 set by Roman Hollowell in 2001 (when he had 522 punt and 431 kickoff).
