Colorado-Texas A&M Notes

November 01, 2008 | Football

Quickly CU had its first two 40-yard plays of the season on offense, both coming in the first half: a 42-yard run by TB Darrell Scott (2nd Q) and a 40-yard pass from QB Cody Hawkins to TB  Demetrius Sumler (1st Q) ... CU's first quarter TD ended a scoring drought that lasted 104 minutes and 17 seconds, as the last Buff score took place with 6:19 left in the second quarter against Kansas State on Oct. 18 ... DE Marquez Herrod made his first career start as CU opened in its base 4-3 defense ... CU's had one first half turnover ? and yes, it came in the second quarter, when the Buffs have now committed 11 of its 16 on the year (with just two in the second half) ... PK Jameson Davis made his first career field goal attempt, knocking it through from 30 yards with :03 left in the first half; CU had missed seven straight prior, including one today, with all seven tries by Aric Goodman, whose last make was the game winner in overtime versus West Virginia ... CU limited A&M to just 76 yards on 22 plays in plus territory (the 50 on in), with 32 of those coming on a third quarter touchdown pass ... A&M was the next to last Big 12 team Dan Hawkins had not coached against until today; the last is Oklahoma State which comes to Boulder on Nov. 15 ... At the Big 12 cross country championships in Ames, the CU men finished second, the first time the Buffs have not been crowned league champs (12 in a row, OSU won), while the women placed fifth, ending a run of 9 straight titles (All-American/Olympian Jenny Barringer did not run as she is redshirting).  CU's next two opponents, Iowa State and Oklahoma State, met today in Stillwater (OSU was ahead, 28-10 at halftime).

VOTIN' BUFFS  Colorado was one of a handful of schools to participate in an ESPN College Game Day survey ahead of Tuesday's presidential election. The results basically fell in line with the national polls from earlier in the week; but what CU can be especially proud of is that of 95 players who were surveyed (out of 109, we missed a few of the inactives), 94 claimed they were going to vote, and about 60 percent of those already had. Here are the tabulated results and what they felt was the most important issue:

In Saturday's Sporting News Today, DT George Hypolite's weekly column was his take on the election.

QB TYLER HANSEN (23-11-2, 89, 0 TD; 16-86 RUSH) Hansen set a school record for the most single-season rushing yards by a true freshman quarterback, as he now has 216 in just three games; the old best was 177 by Marc Walters in 1986 (5 games); Darian Hagan had 175 in 1988 (also in 5 games).

DT GEORGE HYPOLITE (4,3?7 TT, 4 TFL, 2 QBS) Hypolite is the first Buff to have four tackles for loss in a game since Abraham Wright had four against Colorado State in the second game of the 2006 season.  He's the second Buff to log two sacks in a game this year, joining Marquez Herrod's pair against CSU in the opener.

LONG DRIVE RUNNIN... The 98-yard touchdown drive by Colorado was its longest since a 98-yard march (11 plays) against UCLA in Boulder on Sept. 6, 2003 and a 98-yarder in 13 plays at Kansas on Oct. 12, 2002.  CU has six 99-yard touchdown drives in its history, the last one of those coming on Oct. 27, 2001 at Oklahoma State.

THIRD QUARTER BLUES  CU's defense played outstanding in the first, second and fourth quarters, limiting the Aggies to a combined 96 yards in those three quarters (on 45 plays, or just over 2.1 per).  A&M used an explosive third quarter to take over the game, outgaining the Buffs 202-55, despite holding just a 19-15 advantage in plays.  Yards by quarters:

Colorado gained a season-high 392 yards on offense, nearly having a 200-yard day both rushing (194) and passing (198).

QB BREAKDOWN  Here is the breakdown of today's snaps by each CU quarterback; both players took 20 snaps in the first half, which was CU's first 200-plus yard offensive half of the season:

Hawkins (7-of-11, 109 yards, 1 INT) moved past Steve Vogel (3,912 yards) into sixth place in all-time passing yards at Colorado with 3,939.  He also passed Mike Moschetti (366 completions) into third all-time with 369.

WR JOSH SMITH (100 AP YARDS)  Sophomore WR Josh Smith is broaching rare territory in school history, and that's the 1,500-yard all-purpose season.  He now has 1,412 through nine games, which already stands as the 10th most in a single-season at Colorado.  Only eight have reached 1,500 and just four 1,600.  A closer look at the top 10 single-season all-purpose Buffs (regular season games only; *?return yards include all runbacks, punt and kickoff return as well as interception, blocked punt, etc.):.
