Oklahoma State-Colorado Notes

November 15, 2008 | Football

Quickly ILB Shaun Mohler's interception in the fourth quarter snapped a string of 10 consecutive quarters by the opponent without a turnover; it was the second pick of Mohler's career ... Oklahoma State's first possession that started at the CU 44 was the 20th by an opponent that started in Buff territory this season; CU has allowed just 15 scores and only 10 TDs after holding the Cowboys to a field goal ... QB Cody Hawkins 19-yard run in the second quarter was his career long, topping two previous efforts of 13, one of which opened the same quarter tonight ... PK Aric Goodman's tough luck continued, as he missed his eighth straight field goal try, this one on a career-long attempt of 50 yards that drifted wide left at the last moment and hit the upright.  His last make was the 25-yard game winner in overtime to give CU a 17-14 win over West Virginia ... He snapped the streak later in the half with a 31-yard make ... The eight straight misses was a school record, the old one had been four on several occasions; three of those misses hit the uprights ... CU averaged 1.8 yards on first down in the first quarter, but came back to average 7.7 on 11 plays in the second quarter (5.6 for the half; 3.9 for the game after struggling in the second half, gaining 25 yards on 14 first down plays, or 1.4 per).  OSU averaged 8.7 in the first half and 6.8 for the game) ... CU's D answered the bell in the red zone for the most part as OSU cracked the 20 four times but came away with just one TD and three field goals ...  Former Buff basketball letterman Chauncey Billups ('95-97) was welcomed home tonight by the crowd at the first timeout of the second quarter; Billups was traded back to Denver two weeks ago ... Senior SS D.J. Dykes did not dress tonight due to health issues/illness ... Freshman TB Darrell Scott, who reaggravated an ankle sprain earlier in the week in practice, is dressed but was only available in an emergency situation.

FINAL FOLSOM ATTENDANCE  Colorado drew 296,858 for six home games in 2008, finishing the home season with an average of 49,476.3.

CU-OKLAHOMA STATE SERIES  Colorado's lead in the series is now 26-18-1 count, 13-8 in games played in Boulder.  CU has won 11 of the last 14; OSU has won consecutive games in Boulder for the just the second time, the first since claiming three straight (1983-85-88). The winning team in the series has scored at least 30 points in 13 of the last 17 games.  This was the last Big 12 school CU coach Dan Hawkins had not faced.

FOURTH DOWN BUFFS The Buffs had the second best game in their history in fourth down conversions, going 4-of-4 tonight; that's second only to a 5-of-5 effort at Baylor on Nov. 13, 1999.  CU is now 16-of-23 on the season, with the 16 makes a school record for a single year, eclipsing the 14 made (also on 23 tries) in 2003.

TB DEMETRIUS SUMLER (22-86, 1 TD RUSH, 3-10 REC) The sophomore tailback got the start when Darrell Scott wasn't healed up from injury and responded with his best game of the year.  He had a career-high 22 carries, with the 86 yards the second most in his career to 91 he gained against Miami-Ohio in 2007.    Sumler came in with 32 carries for 100 yards and touchdown in the season's first 10 games.

QB CODY HAWKINS (37-19-0, 171, 1 TD, 11-26 RUSH)  Hawkins is now third in both all-time attempts (720), completions (408) and touchdown passes (35) in CU history, moved into though remains sixth in yards (4,336).   Career wise, after gaining 26 rushing yards, he has 4,335 yards of total offense, 4,336 passing and now just minus-1 rushing.

WR JOSH SMITH (7-162 KOR, 187 ALL-PURPOSE YARDS) The sophomore set a school record for the most kickoff returns in a single-season by a Buff; he entered the game with 36, trailing Terrence Wheatley's mark of 37 set in 2007.  He had seven tonight for 43 on the season.   The seven KO returns in a game were the third most by a Buff, trailing eight by Walter Stanley (1981 at Nebraska) and by Shelby Nash (1983 at Missouri).  Smith had 187 all-purpose yards in the game, upping his season total to 1,742; he became just the fifth Buff to surpass 1,600 and 1,700 in a single-season in CU history.  A closer look at the top all-purpose Buffs:

D?J? VU: 5-6 AND NEEDING A WIN OVER NEBRASKA  It will come down again to if the Buffs can beat arch-rival Nebraska to become bowl eligible.  Such was the case in 1997, with No. 2 Nebraska escaping Boulder with a  27-24 win; again, in 2003, when No. 25 Nebraska toppled CU, 31-22; and last year, when CU won 65-51.  All three of those games were in Boulder.
