Colorado-Baylor Notes
October 16, 2010 | Football
Quickly Colorado's 6-0 edge after the first quarter stopped a streak of 12 straight quarters that Baylor had scored in (just the fourth scoreless quarter in 26 for the Bears in 2010) ... CU possessed the ball for 11:33 in the first quarter ... WR/TB Will Jefferson's first collegiate rush (2nd Qtr) went for 10 yards and a first down ... P Zach Grossnickle had just his second touchback in 27punts in the second quarter ... ILB Michael Sipili made his first career interception late in the second quarter ... TE Ryan Deehan had career highs in catches (7) and yards (70) ... PK Aric Goodman (2-2 FG) made two field goals in the same game since last year's Texas A&M contest in Boulder (10 games ago); he made his first kick of the year and missed the next three until his two makes tonight to improve to 3-for-6 in 2010 ... Baylor ran 35 first down plays before losing yardage on its 36th and final one of the evening (only three of the 35 gained zero, meaning 32 plus plays) ... CU's streak of 25 straight games with a quarterback sack came to an end ... Nine players earned first downs for CU, five of whom earned at least one both rushing and receiving ... Baylor owned a 34-4 edge in return yards (punt-INT-FUM-Misc), extended the opponent lead to 352-95 ... Baylor scored 11 points in the third quarter; CU had allowed just 10 in the period in the first five games ... Play was stopped for six times for reviews; all were upheld ... Opponents are now 1-for-7 on fourth down tries this year ... CU possessed the ball for a season high 36:36, doing so for at least eight minutes in each quarter ... The Buffs were tied for second in the nation coming into this game allowing just one rushing TD, but Baylor scored two tonight ... Baylor gained its most yards (543) in the 16-game history of the series (CU's 399 was only it's eighth most); the 942 combined yards was a series high, eclipsing the 915 in the 2007 game ... The series comes to an end with CU owning a 9-7 advantage, with Baylor winning the last two games in Boulder (2006, 2010).
FIRST TRUE FROSH START IN '10 DB Jered Bell made his first career start, subbing for the injured Anthony Perkins at strong safety; Perkins tore an ACL last week at Missouri and will have surgery in the near future. Bell is the first true freshman to make a start for CU this year; the other 10 freshman starts are all by redshirts (OT David Bakhtiari 6, TE/UB Scott Fernandez 1, S Parker Orms 1, TE DeVaughn Thornton 1, CB Paul Vigo 1). The last defensive backs to start a game as true frosh were Patrick Mahnke (2008) and Cha'pelle Brown (2006).
TB RODNEY STEWART (30-125, 2 TD) He passed Tony Reed (1,938), John Bayuk (1,943), Carroll Hardy (1,999) and his position coach, Darian Hagan (2,007) into 16th place all-time on CU's rushing yards list with 2,044. He has now scored 16 career touchdowns, including five this year; he also scored twice versus Hawai'i. The CU junior had his 11th career 100-yard game (third this year), and is now tied for the fifth most in school history with Bobby Anderson and James Mayberry (Eric Bieniemy leads with 22). He also converted on two third down runs, and is now 13-for-17 in third/fourth down rushing this season.
WR SCOTTY McKNIGHT (5-38, 1 TD) With his 13-yard reception on a 3rd-&-13 play late in the second quarter, he extended his regular season streak to 42 games with at least one reception (every game of his career, 43 including postseason); that is an active player best in the NCAA. He also moved into fourth place all-time in receiving yards with 2,188, passing Phil Savoy (2,176) by a yard in the first half. He is now in sole possession of fourth with 18 receiving TDs, two behind co-leaders Rae Carruth and Derek McCoy.
COLORADO INJURIES CB Jimmy Smith (4Q concussion), DE Josh Hartigan (1Q ankle), neither returned and are both listed as day-to-day. Many other bruises and contusions, but no one is expected to miss practice time. S Travis Sandersfeld (leg) might be cleared to play next week; if not, likely for Oklahoma on Oct. 30.
