Colorado-South Alabama Quotes

November 29, 2013 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Linda Lappe
General

“It was another night with really good balance. Offensively, we moved the ball well. We had a lot of different players contribute; we scored on the inside, we scored on the outside. I really like the flow of some of the things we're doing offensively. Defensively, we looked really good at times, other times we had some lapses. We let a few too many three-pointers go, which was the first time we've done that all season. We knew that they wanted to try to get to the paint against us, and they shot the outside shot much better than we had seen them and had to adjust a little bit. Maybe, we didn't do that as well as we should have and would've liked. But, I thought overall, great effort. We stayed focus for 40 minutes; sometimes in a game like that you can lose focus, and not keep getting better. I thought we kept getting better through the game and on both sides of the ball.”

On Southern Alabama's 3-Point Shooting

“Most every one of those were post players. [USA F Rachel Cumbo] was a post player for them for a lot of the game; she played some wing as well. [USA F Jennifer Johnson] was playing post for them. Our post players aren't necessarily used to that – guarding against that every day. I thought just in general, our hands were down a lot. Through the game, even at the beginning of the game, we needed to close out much harder, get a lot better ball pressure on the ball, and just make them a little bit more uncomfortable. I thought there were times when they were very uncomfortable, and there were times in the middle of that second half that they got in a rhythm and I thought became very comfortable. Just a better job of doing our work early, flying our hands. Making sure, as shooters, you don't get to see the rim clear without something distracting you, and something in the way of their focus.”

On The Front Court Being More Involved In Scoring

“I thought our guards looked for them a lot. They started posting up deep in the paint, which was nice. We knew we had a size advantage, definitely, so that was something we were looking for, and I thought our post players did a nice job of making things happen, making plays. Jamee [Swan] got a lot of hers off of offensive rebounds and just hustle plays, which was great for us to see that. It was nice to get them more involved; we've had a lot of guards getting involved. Rachel [Hargis], I thought, did a much better job of not getting in foul trouble so she could be in the game, and was a lot more aggressive.”

On F Jen Reese

“It is nice to have Jen because she gets shots, she moves to open spots, she doesn't need much time, she can hit her fade away. So, she is going to get shots off every single game, it's just a matter of is she ready, and really, is she ready to knock them down. When she's ready and she has that mindset, that scoring mindset, she's pretty tough to guard. We need her to stay involved in the offense and be a huge player for us.”

On The Team's Focus

“Well, we have a bigger focus than even necessarily the game we're currently in. We're playing every day to get better as a team. We're playing to do things that we want to do as a team, and for us, it doesn't necessarily matter who the opponent is, we want to make sure that we work on what we need to work on. Tonight we really worked on boxing out; I thought that was a weakness of ours coming into the game. We focused really hard on it all week. One of our goals was to hold them under eight offensive rebounds – we had it until about the last three minutes of the game when they got a couple. You gotta make sure you have your sights set on what you need to do as a team, you can't just worry about the opposing team all the time. I like that, I like how were focusing.”

On Rice
“They are a little bit bigger; they'll drive it at times, they have some kids that can shoot the three. They have [Jessica Kuster] who is really solid for them. It's kind of a tough matchup from the three and the four; Samford did a decent job on her. They'll be tough. I think they run their offense well, I know [head coach Greg Williams] does a fantastic job; he's a good coach, he's been around the game for a long time. I know they'll be ready. I think it will be good we get that test.”

Colorado Players

Rachel Hargis, Sr., C

On the offense consistently producing

“It's always fun to score that many points and receive a lot of balance from everybody on the team. We did a great job moving the ball and creating easy shots for ourselves, and that was a big thing that we needed to work on. For us to accomplish that, that was a big deal.”

On getting the ball down low

”We keep working on that every day. It was nice to get some fouls and get to the line.”

On the team's focus after blowout games

”We've been focusing a lot on getting better on defense and adjusting to all of the new calls. I think we've gotten better, but we have a lot of work to do still. I think that the way we moved the ball and the way that people are cutting and moving on offense has been great. That is something that we are going to get better at every day, even when we do have blowouts.”

On the importance of winning the Omni Classic

“I think that it's something we can definitely do. I think Rice is going to be a good competition for us, and it is extremely important for us to always protect our home court.”

Jamee Swan, So., F

On having the advantage down low

“It was pretty even, it just came down to who wanted it more. They were good on the inside and strong, but again, it came down to who wanted it more.”

On having career highs

“It was great to be out there and have my team behind me, even when I did have a couple of mess-ups. It was always a, 'you'll get it next time,' and that made it feel great to be out on the court.”
