Tennis Fights No. 27 Arizona State, Falls 4-2

BOULDER
- Even in defeat, the University of Colorado tennis team continued to show strength
against No. 27 Arizona State in a 4-2 contest on Friday afternoon at the Rocky
Mountain Tennis Center at Millennium Hotel Harvest House.
Junior Winde Janssens, in her first win over a ranked opponent, and freshman
Dhany Quevedo both fought off first set deficits to claim victories, but it
wasn't enough to give the Buffaloes the win in their Pac-12 Conference opener.
"Today we came out and competed well," CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "We
need to keep working and keep believing. When we're out there competing with
these good teams, we're right there with them. I think we gave them a little bit
of a lead in some of the matches and they just got on a roll that they were
able to maintain. But when we were in there, we were dead even. What we need to
continue to take into matches, is to be ready to compete from the first point
and believe we deserve to be there and be there from the get go. We competed hard
and I'm happy with a lot of the performances. It was great for Winde to get a
nationally ranked win. We look forward to getting in a sold practice before Arizona
comes in on Sunday."
The Buffs drop to 5-6 overall, 0-1 Pac-12 and hold a 3-2 record at home. They
have one win against three ranked opponents this season. CU continues to show strength
against ASU, after falling 4-3 to the then-ranked No. 30 Sun Devils in Tempe,
Ariz. last year, their smallest margin of defeat against a conference foe since
joining the Pac-12. ASU has lost just once this season and improves to 11-1,
1-0.
The top of the Buffs' lineup excelled to give CU its two points, with Janssens
and Quevedo both standing out in tough three-setters.
For the first time in her career, Janssens defeated a ranked opponent and
handed No. 111 Desirae Krawczyk her fourth loss of the spring. After falling
4-6 in her first set, Janssens blanked Krawczyk 6-0 in the second, and fought
to keep the lead in the third, taking the match with a 6-3 win in the final set.
Janssens continues to shine this season, falling just twice in dual play to
collect her 12th win of the season. Janssens is 2-1 in three-setters this
spring, fighting back after a heartbreaking loss in three sets last week
against No. 73 Princeton. In her career, she has come back after losing the
first a team-high six times.
Quevedo proves that when she gets down, she is far from out of the match. The
newcomer is an impressive 3-0 in three-setters when she drops the first set.
Quevedo fell behind 2-6 in the first set against Leighann Sahagun. She came out
to a 4-3 lead in the second, but was pushed to a tiebreaker, which she claimed
7-3. Quevedo continued to battle in the final set, pushing an extra game and
coming out victorious with a 7-5 win. She leads all Colorado freshmen with a
stellar 9-5 record.
The Buffs conclude their current home-stand against Arizona on Sunday, March
10. First serve is at 10 a.m. at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House.
