Colorado-Colorado State Quotes

November 29, 2014 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Linda Lappe

General

"That was a fun game.  It was a heck of a game and was really well-played on both ends.  Give CSU a ton of credit [Coach] Ryun [Williams] has done a tremendous job there; they keep getting better every single year that he's been there.  We knew it was going to be a great game and we knew we would have to play well.  I thought they played well. Players stepped up and I thought he had some great calls that got them some scores and we were able to get some scores as well.  We've talked a lot about finishing, and if we keep attacking the way that we attacked both overtimes, we're going to have a lot of great things happen in our future."

On Lauren Huggins Nailing the Critical shot at the end of the First Overtime

"Coach Jamie actually drew up that play.  We ran it a couple of times in practice, but Lauren hadn't actually been in when we ran it in practice.  Jamie drew it up and said that she would knock it down.  Lauren did a great job of getting her feet set, Jamee [Swan] set a great screen and just executed the play really well.  Lauren had a great look and had her feet set, and that's what good players do.  They knock down open shots and her teammates did a nice job of getting her that shot."

On Lauren Huggins' Play down the Stretch

"Lauren has gotten a lot better.  She's coming off an off-season surgery and so she's had to work her way back in and was limited in the preseason.  Practice has been a great time for her to get more comfortable and confident.  She's our only Colorado kid and was probably the only Colorado kid on the whole floor.  So for her, this game meant a lot and it meant a lot for our team.  We understand the rivalry.  I've been a part of this rivalry for a long time and she and our seniors really understand it as well.  I was really happy that she was able to contribute like she did tonight."

On Lexy Kresl's Triple-Double

"The triple-double is fantastic, it's a great feat.  Not very many players have been able to get a triple-double in college.  It's a lot of work.  She rebounded the basketball really well, especially in the first half and she got us into the offense, but what I think I'm most proud about is Lexy's composure and her leadership.  That's what we needed most.  We needed that 11th assist, we needed that 11th rebound and that three-pointer in the second overtime.  More than that, we needed her leadership and needed her to run and lead our team.  She did a great job and everybody followed her lead."

On the Play of Elin Gustavsson

"We had a post on her to start the second half, but we had to change that.  She always plays well against us, she hasn't played like that this year and hasn't hit a three-pointer all year, but she did a nice job against us.  I thought Jasmine Sborov really shut her down and slowed her down for the rest of the game.  We kept a guard on her after that, someone a little better at guarding the three-point shots and could guard screens better.  I thought our guards between Lauren, Jasmine and Haley [Smith] did a good job on her."

On Colorado State as Good Competition

"They're a great team.  They have a chance to get to the NCAA tournament.  They keep getting better every year, and that makes for a fun game.  A few years ago we won by 40, and that's not that fun of a game.  You have to give them a ton of credit.  It was a fun game for the fans, our players and the community."

On the Play of Jen Reese

"Jen showed a lot of confidence, especially in the first half and the start of the second half.  She really kept us going offensively for quite a long time.  We were having a tough time scoring in other ways to start out the second half.  She did a nice job of getting some open looks from the high post and the low block.  I feel like she really kept us in the game for a long time, and when we weren't scoring, she helped us score."

On Winning Only The 6th Double Overtime Game In CU Women's Basketball

"It was a lot of fun and it's really great to get this experience early on in the season.  We already had one overtime game this season and it didn't go our way.  So this is great, we got to pull it out while working together and having fun."

On Gaining Only The 4th Triple Double In CU Women's Basketball History

"I'm pretty proud of that because it shows that I'm expanding my game and my abilities compared to past seasons.  It shows that I can help the team in other ways besides scoring."

On Making The Second Half Comeback

"We talked about getting three stops in a row at a time.  Just stringing up the stops to change their momentum (CSU).  When you can get defensive stops it leads to offense as well.  We just played their personal smart and took away their strengths."

On Making The 3 Pointer To Send It To Double Overtime

"They called a timeout and drew up that play.  Coach (Linda Lappe) looked me in the eye and said this shot is for you and you are going to nail it.  I had my team behind me and we executed and was able to go into that second overtime."

On Taking The Big Shot

"I mean anyone would love to get the opportunity.  People sometimes thrive under pressure or they let it get to them.  I was nervous when Coach Lappe said Huggins this shot is going to you.  But I had Lexi Kresl and all my other teammates behind me saying you got this and to have confidence because you're going to nail it."

Colorado State Head Coach Ryun Williams

General

"A 26-25 half time score is just amazing. Both teams battled defensively and it was hard to score. Their length and their size is pretty disruptive to us. I thought we did a lot of good exhibition things in that second half. I really credit our ids. This was a tough one. We had a couple of opportunities to bring that game out. We just didn't quite get it done. But, I'm proud of our basketball team. I think we really grew up in these two days here. Big 12, Pac-12, it doesn't matter. Our kids can compete and I thought they represented Colorado State very well. It's good to win a lot of basketball games."

On Elin Gustavsson and Emilie Hesseldal

"Both of those kids, we asked to pick up their play, and both really responded. Elin [Gustavsson] got 28 and hit a lot of big shots, just playing with the confidence. Emilie [Hesseldal] had a really tough assignment tonight going against [Jamee] Swan and their big kids. She really battled. I thought she had a couple of cheap calls. It would have been nice to have her in there in the end. But, I'll tell you what, Colorado made some big threes. They made some big shots and it was a really good basketball team. I think we saw two teams out there that just refused to lose and we came up a little short."

On How His Team Has Grown

"We really have grown in the last two and a half weeks here. We're playing with some confidence offensively. I think our kids know where we can play from and who to play through at certain times. We just have kids making plays. They're comfortable and you can just see the chemistry growing a little bit. I think that's what it is more than anything. Hopefully it continues to grow. We have to regroup from this tough loss here and we've got a few tough ones coming down the road. They're all going to be like this. We go to Drake which is a really tough place to play. And then at BYU. This is a good learning experience for our kids. To be in this situation, we learned a lot tonight in some situational things. We'll be better because of this game."

On Learning From These Losses

"It's going to make us better. I just like how our kids, these last two games, really competed. Tonight they competed in this hostile environment on the road, it was a travel game. We had a couple of chances at the line to win it and one stop to win it. I give a lot of credit to our kids. I'm proud of how they battled and I need to get in that locker room and pick their heads up so we can get home."
