CU Sweeps Doubles, Tops UTEP 5-2

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Nicole Kenneally's team responded the way she wanted it to from its first loss of the season as Colorado handed UTEP its first loss on Sunday with a 5-2 victory in Albuquerque, N.M.
"[I'm] very happy we got the win, especially on the road," Kenneally said. "Doubles wasn't pretty but we got the job done. We tried some different combinations there and we have different possibilities."
Certainly the new doubles lineup proved to be successful as all three pairs earned close wins. Alex Aiello and Brigitte Beck pulled out a 7-5 win at No. 3 and Jeannez Daniel and Annabelle Andrinopoulos won 7-6 (2) at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point. Tina Bokhua and Nuria Ormeño Ruiz also won 7-6 (5) at the No. 1 position. It was the first time this season the Buffaloes have swept doubles.
Andrinopoulos and Bokhua quickly clinched the match for CU in singles.
"Singles, we started better than we did on Friday," Kenneally said. "It's still early in the season so everyone's getting back into figuring out how to handle a tough competitive situation."
Andrinopoulos breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Daphne Visscher at No. 4 and Bokhua, playing the top position for the first time this season, topped Vivienne Kulicke in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
Ormeño Ruiz also won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 and Aiello battled back to a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (6) win at No. 6 singles for the final two points for the Buffaloes.
Kenneally talked about the consistency at the top of the lineup with Bokhua and Ormeño Ruiz after the match. Those two are a combined 5-0 in singles matches this spring. "I think if you really look at it, Tina and Nuria played the most matches in the fall. It's good that they played the most and they are playing the most complete games right now. It's a job for everyone else to get up [to that level]. Some others didn't play as many matches in the fall. It just comes down to getting back into the groove. With no-ad scoring it's pretty tough. [Daniel] lost today [at No. 3] and had several games that she lost in deuce. We have to do a better job at deuce point [to win those games]."
CU improved to 2-1 on the season, while UTEP dropped to 3-1.
"It would've been nice to go 2-0 down here, but going 1-1 was good," Kenneally said of Friday's loss to New Mexico and Sunday's win over UTEP. "We played at a high level on Friday night and need to keep building on that."
Colorado will return home next weekend for a pair of matches at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center in Boulder. CU will take on the University of Denver on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Boise State on Sunday at 11 a.m. before hitting the road for the entire month of February.
