Buffs Fall To 18th-Ranked Ole Miss
February 21, 2016 | Tennis
NEW ORLEANS - Colorado's tennis team finished a tough road trip with a 7-0 loss to 18th-ranked Ole Miss on Sunday in New Orleans.
"Ole Miss is very similar to a lot of the teams we play in the Pac-12," said head coach Nicole Kenneally. "Today we saw at several positions we can compete at that level. We've got to create our opportunities. We have to take care of our stuff physically and mentally. We can compete with these teams, but we have to get over the hump."
Jeannez Daniel and Annabelle Andrinopoulos gave CU a good start in doubles with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 position. Facing the 24th-ranked doubles team in the country, Tina Bokhua and Nuria Ormeño Ruiz fell behind 5-0 at the No. 1 position, but rallied to even things up at 6-6 and force a tiebreaker and dropped that by a score of 7-5.
"It was a great because Nez and Belle came out and played a really clean set of doubles," said Kenneally. "Hopefully they see the fruits of their hard work and can build off that."
The Rebels won all six singles positions, but CU was competitive at several spots. Daniel and Andrinopoulos both took their matches to third-set tiebreakers. Daniel won the first set 6-0, but dropped the second 6-3. Playing out a full set in the third, she and Mai El Kamash, ranked 65th in the country, split the first 12 games before El Kamash edged Daniel 12-10 in a seven-point tiebreaker.
Andrinopoulos lost her first set 7-5 and then won 6-3 at the No. 5 singles position against Zalina Khairudinova. With the team score already decided, they played a 10-point tiebreaker instead of a full third set and Khairudinova edged Andrinopoulos 10-8.
Ormeño Ruiz was also very competitive at the No. 2 position, falling 7-5, 6-3 to 88th-ranked Natalie Suk.
"We have a lot of great players and great talent, but we're young right now," said Kenneally. "If we keep competing the way we've been competing, we're going to get some opportunities. We just have to take advantage when we do get those opportunities."
The Buffaloes will be off next week and will return to action on Saturday, March 5, at home against Colorado State at 11 a.m.
