Buffs' Bid For Second Straight Win Falls Short
March 19, 2016 | Tennis
SEATTLE - Colorado's bid for consecutive conference wins ended on Friday as the Buffaloes fell 5-2 at Washington. The loss dropped them 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the Pac-12, while UW improved to 10-7 and 1-3 in Pac-12 play. The Buffs were coming off a win over Arizona at home on Sunday.
"I think we came in with the right mindset," head coach Nicole Kenneally said of coming off a win on Sunday. "We had two pretty good practices under our belt [on the road] on Wednesday and Thursday. It shows just how tough the Pac-12 is when you play at home. [Washington] felt like they had something to prove and I think we did too. We had a couple of positions where we were competitive, but we just weren't able to convert. That's sometimes the difference between a win and a loss. We've got players who are getting better. Unfortunately for them, that doesn't always show in the score."
The Huskies swept doubles with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 for an early 1-0 lead in the match.
UW pulled ahead 5-0 in the match with singles wins at No. 5, No. 3, No. 1 and No. 6 before CU pulled out two victories. Jeannez Daniel knocked off the 105th-ranked player in the country, defeating Stacey Fung 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 position. It was her first win over a nationally-ranked opponent in a Buffs uniform in three tries.
Annabelle Andrinopoulos rallied for a three-set victory at No. 4 singles. She dropped the first set 6-4, but came back for a 7-5 win in the second, holding on after a 5-2 lead in the frame. With the match already clinched by UW, Andrinopoulos and Tami Grende played a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a full third set and Andrinopoulos won 10-2 for her second consecutive Pac-12 victory.
"Nez and Belle both got way up in their second sets and both of their opponents made runs and it was fantastic for both of them to close those out," Kenneally said. "That was a good sign. The goal [after the first set] was for Nez to come out and win the match and for Belle to win the tiebreaker and they did that. The two of them are both newcomers and are facing the Pac-12 and having success and competing. That's great to see."
CU will return to action on Sunday at Washington State at 11 a.m. PT/12 p.m. MT.
