Colorado Cruises Past UNLV
February 21, 2025 | Tennis
LAS VEGAS – Colorado's fast start led the Buffaloes over UNLV 4-1 Friday morning at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Colorado (6-1) extended its regular season winning streak against non-Power Five teams to 22 matches, giving UNLV (6-1) its first loss of the season.
"Proud of our ladies today," head coach Anthony Pham said. "We competed our behinds off and are learning to lean in and embrace adversity. We look forward to taking on a tough Penn State squad tomorrow."
A last-second lineup change in doubles saw Anya Nelson and Rixt van der Werff see the court together for the first time. The duo clinched the doubles point following Lera Alexin and Mila Stanojevic's opening win.
The two doubles wins gave the Buffs the doubles point for the fifth time this season and second in a row.
Tokac and Alexin extended the lead, each extending their singles win streaks. Alexin won the first match at No. 6 singles, her fourth straight victory. Tokac, at No. 3 singles, won her seventh straight match to start the spring season. This is the second straight season beginning with at least a seven-match win streak after starting the season with nine straight a year ago.
After UNLV scored their only point of the day, Stanojevic brought it home with a win at No. 1 singles. She came in on a two-match slide but played the hero, clinching the match in straight sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UNLV got the morning started at No. 1 doubles against El Sayed and Rebec, who returned to the top spot. Nikol Mircheva and Hanna Vinahradava claimed the day's first win, 6-2.
Colorado's first win came from Alexin and Stanojevic at No. 3 doubles against Kaho Oyama and Sofiia Sokolvak. With the match tied at four, the pairing took the final two games, winning 6-4.
At No. 2 doubles, Nelson and Van der Werff played their first match together against Cindy Hu and Coco Zhao. Tied at five games, the Buffs duo took the final two games to clinch the doubles point after a 7-5 victory.
With an early 1-0 lead after doubles, Alexin pushed it early, cruising through Sokolvak at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-2. This was the third straight match, winning the first set 6-0 and the fourth straight victory overall.
Tokac continued her scorching start to the season, winning her seventh straight match to start the spring. She ended the day with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles against Zhao, giving Colorado a 3-0 lead.
UNLV earned its lone point of the day at No. 4 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win by Mircheva over Van der Werff, making the score 3-1.
At the top of the order, Stanojevic got back in the win column against Hu. Each set was a battle, but she came out on top in both sets, winning 6-4, 6-4 and clinching the match for Colorado 4-1.
El Sayed and Rebec's matches were left unfinished at No. 2 and No. 5 singles after the victory was clinched. El Sayed was leading in the third set 6-1, 4-6, 2-1 and Rebec had just started the second set.
