CU’s four-game winning streak ends in Ames

AMES, Iowa – Colorado's four-game winning streak came to a halt Saturday afternoon. The Buffaloes, making their first visit to Hilton Coliseum since 2011, fell to Iowa State, 86-56.

Colorado falls 7-5 in the Big 12 and 16-7 overall. The Cyclones move to 8-5 in the conference and 17-9 overall.

"I thought we played hard," head coach JR Payne expressed after the game. "Everybody that took the floor tonight in a black uniform played really hard. As a group, we needed to play smarter and execute the game plan a little bit better. But Iowa State is such a great team that if you aren't 100% where you're supposed to be, they're going to make you play. They definitely outplayed us today."

The Buffs had two players in double figures on Saturday, led by Iowa State transfer Nyamer Diew and her 15 points. Johanna Teder closed the afternoon with 11 points.

The Cyclones closed hitting 56.5% from the field with 11 3-pointers. Audi Crooks was the offensive key for Iowa State. The Big 12's leading scorer closed with 33 points and 11 rebounds.

"She's just a rare combination of size, skill and mobility," Payne said of Crooks. "If she can get in the paint, what we call the 'kill zone,' then she's very tough to stop. You're not going to really ever stop her, but if you could make her touches a little more difficult and guard the 3-point line, I think that would have been more effective. We didn't necessarily do either as well as we needed to."

Offense was on display from both teams early in the contests on Saturday, with each side hitting over 50% at the start. ISU got out to a 6-for-8 start, with Colorado going 4-for-8. A Teder 3-pointer got CU going in the quarter, sparking a string of four straight makes to get within five, 14-9, at the first timeout.

The game flipped on the Buffs after the timeout, with the Cyclones hitting five 3-pointers in the period and finishing the quarter on a 17-0 run to take the 29-9 lead after 10 minutes of play.

A Kindyll Wetta 3-pointer opened the second quarter for the Buffs, but Iowa State continued to hit from behind the arc early in the quarter, extending the lead to 22, 37-15, at the 5:09 mark. Colorado hit four 3s in the second quarter, but the Cyclones continued to have the hot hand, shooting 42.9% to keep the Buffs at a 20-point distance, 43-23, at the break.

The Cyclones controlled the play in the post in the first half, outscoring CU 22-8 in the paint. Crooks caused matchup problems for Colorado's defense, as she totaled 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting at the break.

The Buffs used a 6-0 run to open the third quarter, with Lior Garzon getting an old-fashioned three-point play for her 1,500th career point, cutting the ISU lead down to 14, but that was as close as CU would get the rest of the way. The Cyclones answered with a 12-2 run to go back up 55-31 midway through the third and maintained a 19-point lead at the quarter's close.

Iowa State pushed its lead to 32 in the fourth quarter on its way to its 13th home win of the season.
