Texas Tech Edges CU In Big 12 Match Play
October 13, 2026 | Men's Golf
Championship shortened due to inclement weather
SALT LAKE CITY – The Colorado men's golf team lost a tough match and had another cancelled sue to the weather here Tuesday in the second day in the Big 12 Conference Match Play Championship,
The weather – temperatures in the 40's with heavy rainfall and some wind – forced Tuesday's afternoon round to be cancelled. The schools will now play four rounds instead of five. The Buffs were barely into their match with Utah when play was called.
The day started on the 7,209-yard, par-72 Salt Lake Country Club course with two Buffs finishing their second round matches that were suspended due to darkness; those didn't factor into CU's match against Houston, which had already clinched a win.
In the morning match, CU battled No. 6-ranked Texas Tech – and the No. 2 seed in the event – competing toe-to-toe with the Red Raiders before losing, 3-2.
Junior Asher Whitaker began his first match against TTU's Simon Hovdal on the 8th hole with each making three straight pars and then a bogey before the Red Raider birdied the 508-yard, par-5 12th hole to take what amounted to a brief lead. Whitaker then birdied the 428-yard 13th hole to tie the match, then would go on a birdie binge. In birdying four of the next five holes, he zoomed to a 4-up lead and went on to triumph, 3 & 2.
Freshman Colt Farrow was one of the two Buffs who couldn't finish Monday; he was ahead of UH's Chi Chun with just the 13th to play but made a bogey and halved the match. He lined up against Texas Tech's Ben Gregg, the world's 85th ranked amateur, and not only held his own, but defeated him 1-up. He never trailed in the match, taking a one-hole edge on five different occasions, the last coming on their final hole, the 437-yard, par-4 6th; Farrow made par while Gregg bogeyed.
Senior Brandon Knight fell behind early against Tech's Adam Bresnu, though won their opening hole when he birdied the 461-yard, par-4 9th. Bresnu, the 13th ranked amateur in the world, won the next two holes, and then after noth tie the next pair, won four of the next seven to go as many as 5-up. Knight bounced back a bit with birdies on 4 and 4, but when made par on 6, Bresnu won, 3 & 2.
Senior Ty Holbrook opened Tuesday making a birdie on 17 that gave him a 2 & 1 win over Houston's Grant Doggett in a battle of two Texans. He then had a tough go of it against Texas Tech's Alvaro Pastor, dropping the match 6 & 4; he won the hole they started on (8), but lost four of the next six holes to fall three behind. Pastor then won in 14 holes after Holbrook bogeyed 1, 2 and 3.
Junior Parker Paxton also was matched against a top ranked amateur, Tim Wiedemeyer who checked in No. 18 in the latest compilation. Wiedemeyer had to rally to beat his CU counterpart 2-up, having the birdie their last two holes (8 and 9). Paxton was in the lead by either one or two holes the entire back nine and the first four holes on the frpnt until Wiedemeyer rallied to make four birdies on the last five holes overall.
Sophomore Tyler Long did not play on Tuesday after competing in both of Monday's matches.
"It was a great match with Texas Tech, who is one of the best teams in the country and a national championship contender," said head coach Roy Edwards. "Really nice wins by Colt and Asher and we were right there in Parker's match too.
"The weather, which is just part of what you deal with in golf, and unfortunately has reduced the tournament by one match," he added. "Beating a good Utah team on their home course will be a tall order but I know the guys are excited for it."
With the event shortened to four rounds, the winners of Oklahoma State vs. West Virginia and Texas Tech vs. Arizona State will be declared co-champions. Colorado will face off against Utah, with TCU and UCF matching-up; the winners will be declared in a tie for 13th and the losers in one for 15th. A shotgun start is set for 8:30 a.m., with less probability of any rain but temperatures in the mid-40's when they tee off.
NOTES: The weather remained on the miserable side, 44 degrees to start the day – 0nly reaching a high of 49 – with light rain … Texas Tech had four foreigners as did Houston; Kansas State had five, this in the first three matches, the Buffs battled 13 in all in three mini-Ryder Cups … Whitaker and Farrow have had the most success here so far: Whitaker is 2-1 in matches, winning or tying on 82.4 percent of his holes (42 of 51), while Farrow is 1-0-1 with an 80.6 percentage (29 of 36). Holbrook has won the most holes (13) as he is 1-1-1 in matches … CU is now 1-1 all-time versus Texas Tech in dual matches, having defeated the Red Raiders two years ago in this event in Hockley, Texas; TTU at the time was ranked 14th nationally..
