Ikedo Advances To Main Draw At ITA Mountain Regional Championships
October 13, 2026 | Tennis
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - As the sole Buff to compete Tuesday at the ITA Mountain Regional Championship, second-year Yukiko Ikedo secured two singles wins, including one third-set tiebreaker, to qualify for main draw entry Wednesday.
Following a multitude of morning rain delays, Ikedo and Colorado coaches Anthony Pham and Erick Garcia traveled from Provo to Salt Lake City to compete at the University of Utah's indoor courts.
"She played super consistent," Garcia said. "She trusted her game, came to the net at the right times and made the right decisions."
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
In the first round of the qualifier, the Japan native met Weber State's Tori Jeppson and immediately found success. After going 6-1 in the first set, Ikedo faced a competitive matchup through set two, battling 6-4 before defeating the first-year Wildcat in straight sets.Â
Needing to outlast both qualifying opponents to enter the main draw, Ikedo looked to carry momentum into her second match of the day, with hopes to secure early victories to open the Buffs regionals slate.
Alternating points through the first set, Ikedo was able to utilize opportunities and narrowly defeat New Mexico's Meghna Anand 6-4. With an emphasis on serving, the Lobo took the second set 6-3 to send the match to a third set.Â
Finding rhythm early, Ikedo took an early 4-1 lead and remained on top of her opponent the remainder of the tiebreaker, though taking on a hard fight. The young Buff found her advantage at the net, winning the tiebreaker 10-6 to meet the other six competing Buffs in play Wednesday.Â
"We are proud of the way she competed and handled herself ," Pham said. "Yuki and the rest of her teammates have some good opportunities tomorrow."
