Fang Finishes 23rd in The Prestige Individual
LA QUINTA, Calif. – The University of Colorado men's golf team had hoped to make a move up the standings in Wednesday's final round of the 26th Annual "The Prestige at PGA West," but extremely high winds forced cancellation about two-and-a-half hours into the final round.
CU finished 16th in the 24-team event, but the Buffs never teed off as they were scheduled to play in the afternoon round. Winds were gusting at least 50 miles per hour, with balls rolling off greens and a few palm trees actually cracking into two. Senior Hunter Swanson posted the Buffs highest finish, tying for eighth, the ninth top 10 finish (and 16th top 20) of his career.
The Buffaloes will remain in the Palm Springs area for some practice rounds and will compete in Wyoming's Desert Intercollegiate, set for next Monday through Wednesday in Palm Desert. Other teams set participate in addition to CU and host Wyoming are Cal Baptist, Cal Irvine, Cal Poly, College of the Desert, CSU-Fullerton, CSU-Northridge, Drake, East Texas A&M, Maryland, Nebraska-Omaha, Oral Roberts, Sacramento State, Seattle, Southern Utah, Valparaiso, UC Riverside and UC-Santa Barbara.
THE PRESTIGE INDIVIDUAL: Sophomore Michael Fang also made the trip and competed in the companion "The Prestige Individual" at the Golf Club of Terra Lago in nearby Indio. He finished 23rd after closing with a 7-ove 79 on the 7,060-yard, par 72 course design; he opened with a pair of 75's. The winds weren't as bad as they were a few miles to the east in LaQuinta, but the average score in third round ballooned to 78.6, two-and-a-half strokes higher than in Tuesday's second round. There were 21 scores in the 80's and three other 79's, essentially making Fang's effort smack in the middle of the pack as 48 players finished out of the 52 that started. Fang closed with seven birdies ands 32 pars with 11 bogeys, three doubles and a triple, while playing the par-5's at 2-over (12th-best in the field), the par-4's at 5-over and the par-3's at 6-over. Stanford's Kush Arora claimed medalist honors with a 4-under 212 total, as he was one of just two players under par for the event.
