Buffs Open Fall Camp, Head to Colorado Springs for First Week of Practice

BOULDER — The Colorado Buffaloes football team reported for fall camp Sunday at the Champions Center, then boarded buses for Colorado Springs, where the Buffs will spend the opening week of preseason practice at Fountain-Fort Carson High School.
Colorado will be housed at the CU's Colorado Springs campus (UCCS) for the duration of the trip. All practices in Colorado Springs are closed to the public.
A total of 104 players reported for camp as Colorado begins its fourth season under Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders. He enters the year with a staff that carries 250 combined years of coaching experience, including 172 at the college level and 106 at the Power Four level.
"This is the best coaching staff I've ever had in my coaching tenure — high school, college, everything," Coach Prime said last month at Big 12 Media Days. "This is the best staff."
Coach Prime has been equally direct about how the roster was assembled, pointing to fit and mentality over recruiting rankings.
"It is us. It's who we are, what we desire," Coach Prime said. "It's not just grabbing the guy who is a four-star or five-star. It's the guys that fit and the guys that have that mentality that they want to play the game."
The Buffs added a large group of newcomers in the offseason, and defensive back Naeten Mitchell said the roster has spent the months since January building chemistry.
"When you first walk in, everybody's new," Mitchell said. "We brought in a lot of new players from different places, and you don't really know each other too well. But from January to now, we've been working a lot on building a brotherhood and connecting with each other outside of football."
Colorado welcomes new coordinators on both sides of the ball, with Brennan Marion running the offense and Chris Marve leading the defense.
Monday marks one month until the season opener. Colorado plays at Georgia Tech on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m. on ESPN, then returns to Folsom Field for its home opener Saturday, Sept. 12, against Weber State at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
Also Monday, CU announced that Jason Phillips is no longer with the CU football program in order to attend to a family matter. Rashad Davis has assumed his role as Assistant Coach/Wide Receivers. A.J. Smith has also joined the staff as an offense analyst.
