Are you interested in finding out what it takes to be a part of the 18-Time National Champion University of Colorado ski team? Below are the 10 most commonly asked questions about the team:

What league/division do you compete in?

 

We are NCAA Division 1 School, competing in Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association (Western Region of the U.S.).  The RMISA includes the Buffaloes along with Alaska Anchorage, Denver, Montana State, New Mexico and Utah competing at the Division I level.  There are also three non-NCAA associate members, Colorado Mountain College and Westminster College in Alpine and Wyoming in Nordic. The RMISA annually places all of its schools among the leaders at the NCAA Championships.  More info can be found at rmisaskiing.com.


What is the FIS point range of your Varsity team for both men and women?

 

We use FIS points/world ranking to rank the best available applicants and best point holders will be offered scholarships based on availability.


How many athletes are typically carried on the varsity team, both men and women?

 

The team typically carries around 24 athletes (6 Alpine and 6 Nordic for each gender).

 

What types of scholarships, if any, are available?

 

Athletic scholarships are available for both sports and genders.

 

If an athlete does not qualify for a scholarship or if scholarships are not available, would there be a possibility of getting help with the admissions process?

 

Yes, as long as the student-athlete qualifies for walk-on status.

 

What are typical GPA, SAT scores and class rank of applicant?

 

The minimum requirements are the NCAA Eligibility Center Division I and Pac-12 Conference standards.

 

Is your team comprised of recruited athletes only? How are walk-on considered?

 

Due to limits on available scholarships, walk-ons are always included in our team. They enjoy the same benefits as scholarship athletes in the areas of equipment, travel, training and race expenses.

 

Where do you train and how long of a drive is it?

 

CU Ski Team both Nordic and Alpine home facility is Eldora. It is a 30-minute drive from campus.  Preseason and early snow training takes place at Echo Mountain, which is about one hour from campus.  The Nordic team travles for preseason training to the nearest snow covered facility which is typically Winter Park or Steamboat Springs.

 

How often do you train?

 

The Alpine Team typically trains four days a week on snow and two days in the gym during the season from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.  The Nordic Team trains from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Classes for ski student-atheltes are scheduled after 11 a.m.
