The Dick Schoenberger Memorial Award

The outstanding skier each year is presented the Dick Schoenberger Memorial award. Schoenberger was a close friend and supporter of the Buff ski team for many years until his death in 1963. He hosted the ski team at his ranch, the C Lazy U near Winter Park, Colo., during the ski season for many years.

Award Notes:

  • The Dick Schoenberger Award is the CU Ski Team's oldest award and was handed out for the 48th season to Matt Gelso in 2010.
  • A total of 42 CU skiers have won the Dick Schoenberger Award and it has been handed out 50 times over the past 48 years.
  • Egil Nilsen (1982-84) is the only Buffalo to have won the award three times.
  • Mike Porcarelli (1970, '72) was the first CU skier to win the award twice.  He has since been joined by Nilsen, Aage Schaanning (1987-88), Per Kare Jakobsen (1989-90), Bjorn Svensson (1991-92), Nathan Schultz (1993-94), Ove Erik Tronvoll (1998-99) and Matt Gelso (2007, '10).
