Becoming A Buff - Q&A

Becoming A Buff - Q&A
BE THE BEST, SKI WITH THE BUFFS:
Colorado has won 20 national championships in skiing: 11 men's (1959-60-72-73-74-75-76-77-78-79-82), eight coed (1991-95-98-99-2006-11-13-15) and one women's (1982, AIAW). The 20 NCAA titles by Colorado trail only Denver for the NCAA all-time lead, as the Pioneers have won 23 (last in 2016). Not only has CU dominated as a team, Colorado skiers have won 94 individual NCAA titles, topping Denver (88), Utah (74) and Vermont (64) for the most by any school and the Buffs have collected 481 All-America honors in program history. In the 27 years under head coach Richard Rokos, CU has finished as the runner-up seven times to go with the eight titles in his tenure.

ASK THE COACHES:
1. What league/division do you compete in? Colorado is an NCAA Division I school, competing in the RMISA Conference, which is made up of teams from Alaska-Anchorage, Alaska-Fairbanks, Colorado, Colorado Mountain College, Denver, Montana State, New Mexico, Utah, Westminster College and Wyoming.

2. What is the FIS point range of your varsity team for both men and women? FIS points will rank the best available applicants, and the best point holders will be offered scholarships based on availability.

3. How many athletes are typically carried on your varsity team, men and women? The team carries up to 24 athletes (six alpine and six Nordic for each gender). This number can fluctuate by one person.

4. What types of scholarships, if any, are available? Athletic scholarships are available for both sports and genders.

5. If an athlete does not qualify for a scholarship or if scholarships are not available, would there be the possibility of getting help with the admissions process? Yes, as long as the student-athlete qualifies for walk-on status and is in desired point range (below 60 points).

6. What are typical GPA, SAT scores and class rank of applicants? Applicants must meet the minimum NCAA Eligibility Center Division I standards.

7. Is your team comprised of recruited athletes only? How are walk-on candidates considered? Due to limits of available scholarships, walk-ons are always welcomed on our team. They are eligible for the same benefits as scholarship athletes in the areas of equipment, travel, training and race expenses.

8. Where do you train and how long of a drive is it? Colorado’s home facility is the Eldora Mountain Resort, a 21-mile, 30-minute drive west of campus.

9. How often do you train? The team trains daily during season, combining morning and afternoon segments, at Eldora. Classes for ski team members are scheduled to accommodate the training schedule.

10. Is there any other pertinent information that a perspective student-athlete should consider when looking at the Buffs and the University of Colorado? All questions are pertinent when making this decision, and can be answered by calling us at 303/492-5401.
