Ariko Iso is in her second year as the associate athletic trainer for football at Colorado, as she joined the CU sports medicine staff on August 16, 2021. She brought a vast amount of experience with her to the position, including time spent in the National Football League and at two FBS college programs.
Iso, 51, came to Colorado from Loyola University in Baltimore, Md., where she was an assistant athletic trainer from 2020-21 after working briefly with the Los Angeles Wildcats of the XFL which had followed two years (2018-19) as the head football athletic trainer at Towson University.
That followed two years as the associate athletic trainer at San Jose State University (2017-18), where she earned her advanced degree. Iso had returned to her undergraduate alma mater, Oregon State University, where she was the head football athletic trainer from 2011-17. The Beavers played in the 2012 Valero Alamo Bowl, where Texas scored two late touchdowns to rally for the win.
Prior to returning to OSU, she was the only female athletic trainer in the NFL, spending nine seasons on the staff of the Pittsburgh Steelers. With the Steelers, she was a part of two Super Bowl champion teams, XL in 2005 (defeating Seattle) and XLIII in 2008 (defeating Arizona in the last minute). Pittsburgh also won the 2010 AFC title but lost to Green Bay in Super Bowl XLV. Three former Buffaloes were under her watchful eye during her time with the Steelers, Kordell Stewart, Jeremy Bloom and Mitch Berger.
Prior to accepting the position with the Steelers, Iso spent five years as the associate athletic trainer for Portland State University, where she served as the head football trainer. Her collegiate career also includes serving as the assistant athletic trainer at Foothill College in California for nearly three years.
She is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society and is certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association.
In addition to her collegiate experience, Iso has served as the head trainer at the 2006 World 21 and Under Track Championships, the 2001 World Cross Country Championships, the 1998 Yokohama International Ekiden and the 1996 East-West Shrine Football Game. She has also worked at the Nike World Master Games, U.S. Mobil Outdoor Track and Field Championships and at the 1994 World Cup Soccer tournament.
The Tokyo native came to the United States to attend college and graduated from Oregon State with a bachelor's of science degree in Health and Human Performance in 1993. She earned a master's of art in physical education and athletic training from San Jose State in 1995.
She was born in Tokyo, Japan, on December 7, 1970 and graduated from its Futaba High School where she was on the basketball team. Her hobbies include international traveling, eating and cooking. Most of her relatives still live in Japan; a nephew is a collegiate tennis player (at Tokyo’s Sophia University) and another nephew is a high school competitive downhill skier and tennis player (Toride High School in the Ibaragi prefecture).
