Lauren Unrein is in her first year as the associate athletic director for CU’s Scripps Leadership and Career Development program, promoted to the position on July 1, 2021.  She previously had served as the assistant director in the area since March 2018.

Unrein, 31, has been the leader in the developing the “Buffs with a Brand” program, instituted in the summer of 2020 ahead of the long-awaited NCAA allowing student-athletes to benefit from their name, image and likeness (NIL).

She originally joined the athletic department staff as a development assistant in the Buff Club in 2013.  She eventually was promoted to an associate director of development and then the annual fund director for the Buff Club which included being responsible for the National Buff Club Cabinet Program.  She then transitioned into working exclusively in leadership and career development, which in her roles with the Buff Club she had been supporting and focusing on student-athlete career readiness.

Unrein graduated from CU in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in English and Political Science.  She was a member of CU’s club swimming team (backstroke and individual medley), helping the team win three collegiate club championships and at one time set the individual record in the 200-meter backstroke.  Also a member of the 200-meter free relay team that still holds the school record, she was selected as CU’s Club Sports Athlete of the Year as a senior in 2011.

After CU, Unrein went on to earn her masters in Sport Administration from the University of Northern Colorado in 2012. While in graduate school, she worked as an Academic and Life Skills Coordinator for the UNC Athletic Department.  She worked as an associate for Greenhouse Scholars in Boulder after graduating.

She graduated from the city’s Wasson High School where she lettered in swimming (she often swam at the U.S. Olympic Training Center).  Her hobbies include all things outdoors, including hiking, swimming, and fly-fishing.  She is married to Scott Unrein, CU football's operations and recruiting assistant.  Several family members have graduated from CU (she is a fourth generation Buff), including her very well-known second cousin to CU fans, ESPN’s Chris Fowler.
