Steve Englehart
- Title:
- Director of Sports Performance for Olympic Sports
- Email:
Stephen Englehart is the Director of Strength & Conditioning for Olympic Sports at the University of Colorado, joining the athletic department in 2011. He has directed the strength and conditioning program for the Colorado men's basketball team since April 2016.
Englehart has led the physical development of eight players that have gone on to play in the NBA during his time at Colorado including seven draft picks with three hearing their names in the first round. His first season in 2016-17 he oversaw the strength & conditioning of Derrick White, a first round draft pick by the San Antonio Spurs who would go on to win an NBA title with the Boston Celtics in 2024 as well as an Olympic Gold Medal with USA Basketball in Paris.
In 2023-24, Colorado saw three former players drafted into the NBA, including first rounders Cody Williams (10th pick to Utah) and Tristan da Silva (18th pick to Orlando) along with KJ Simpson (42nd pick to Charlotte). The three picks in 2024 were tied with Kentucky for the second-most from any school. Connecticut led all schools with four.
With Englehart on staff, Colorado has won at least 20 games five times, headlined by a school-record 26-win season in 2023-24. The Buffaloes have made two NCAA Tournament appearances, with a third certainly in the mix had it not been for the cancelation of the 2020 postseason. Colorado has also made four NIT appearances in his time.
Prior to his duties with men's basketball, he worked with the Buffaloes' football, women's soccer, women's golf, men's golf and tennis programs. Originally hired as a strength & conditioning coach, he was named to his current role overseeing Olympic Sports in July 2018.
He is certified as a strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He also holds certifications with USAW, FMS and TPI Level 1&2.
Englehart came to CU from Southern Methodist University, where he worked one year (2010) as the assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Mustangs. That followed one season (2009) as the head football strength coach at Portland State University, his first full-time year in the profession. He got his start in the business as a graduate assistant at the University of Hawai’i, where he spent three years (2006-08). At Hawaii he was in charge of men’s and women’s basketball as well as other sports. He was on the Warrior staff the year the UH earned a Sugar Bowl invitation against Georgia as a “BCS” buster following a 12-0 regular season in 2007.
While at Hawai’i, he earned his Master’s in Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science in the spring of 2009. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Southeastern Louisiana University in 2005.
He was born June 5, 1981 in New Orleans, and graduated from Fountainbleau High School (Mandeville, La.), where he lettered in basketball. His twin brother, Chad, is the head strength coach for the NFL's Washington Commanders. He is married to the former Laura Williams (a registered nurse at the Rocky Mountain Cancer Center in Longmont); the couple has three children, Braylon, Coralee, and Magnolia.
