Joe Romig, who owns one of the three retired jerseys in CU football history (No. 67) finished sixth in the 1961 Heisman Trophy balloting. Impressive in its own right, it's even more so when realized that Romig earned his laurels playing as a 5-foot, 10-inch, 199-pound offensive guard. He was a two-time first-team All-American, and is one of just five players to have earned first-team all-conference honors three times. He was the Buffs' 1961 team captain and the United Press International's Lineman of the Year. He is a member of the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame (inducted in 1973), the College Football Hall of Fame (inducted in 1984) and the GTE Academic All-America Hall of Fame (inducted in 1989). Romig earned a Rhodes Scholarship to attend Oxford University in England.
