CU Falls In Double Overtime To San Francisco 1-0

September 17, 2000 | Soccer

BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team ( 4-4) had their four-game winning streak snapped today in double overtime, falling to the University of San Francisco ( 4-3-1) by a score of 1-0 here Sunday afternoon.

"They just need to get their rest, they were a little sluggish today," said head coach Austin Daniels. "They need to get their rest tomorrow and be ready for a tough week of training before we head to Texas. All the teams we have played to this point have been a challenge for us to prepare us for the conference season, and we are looking forward to it."

The game-winner for the Lady Dons came in the 117th minute, as Kirsteen Buchan ran onto a pass from Jodie Tanga, which she then flicked past a sliding Danielle Bassett to end the game and Colorado's winning streak. Bassett had three saves on the day after entering the game for an injured Sara Erskine in the 75th minute. It was a physical contest, as Colorado tallied 18 fouls to San Francisco's 11, with the Buchan earning a yellow card for the collision with Erskine at the 74:04 mark, and CU's Heather Zonker and Lindsey Galas also drawing cautions.

Colorado were not without their chances offensively, as the Buffs got off 16 shots total, nine on goal. USF countered with 21 shots, also with nine on goal. Senior forward Melissa Cartmell and sophomore forward Jessi Burgener led the Buffs with three shots apiece, while USF's Meghan Daly led all shooters with six.

"I don't think that we played our game today, we played down to their level," said Cartmell. "I thought we were the better team, but we did not play like it today. We were sluggish and had a lot of games this week, so that was part of the reason. We just never really got into our groove. Now we have to refocus because we have a huge weekend coming up in Texas."

The Buffs are back in action this weekend as they open up Big 12 play, traveling to the Lone Star State to take on Texas and Texas A&M. CU will face UT at 6:00 p.m. MDT on Friday, Sept. 22 in Austin, and will then travel to College Station to take on the Aggies at noon on Sept. 24.
