MADISON, Wis. ? Kendra Strandemo, Veera Nurmi and Martina Sedivec all claimed singles wins, however Wisconsin won three other singles slots including the decisive double point to edge the University of Colorado women's tennis team, 4-3, Saturday afternoon.
CU, ranked No. 70th nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) narrowly upset the No. 48th ranked Lady Badgers on their two-day trip to the Midwest where they will also take on Marquette, Sunday morning.
Strandemo continued her pursuit on the all-time single victories list winning her 61st career match upsetting No. 53 Katie McGaffigan, 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 1 singles slot. It was Strandemo's second straight win to open the season and moved her into a tie for 16th place on the school's all-time winners list.
CU also saw its strength from their underclassmen as Nurmi won her first of the spring and eighth of her freshman season taking a 7-5, 6-3 winner at No. 4, while Sedivec made it 2-0 this month and 19th of her career taking a 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 win.
“We fought hard at our positions, but Wisconsin was a little better than us today,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “Wisconsin is a team we want to see again in the NCAA Tournament.”
