Colorado-Oklahoma State Quotes

Colorado Head Coach Gary Barnett
On the Buffalo defense
“I thought our defense was on the ball, we had a good plan and we sort of knew what they were going to do.  I thought we tackled pretty well.  They had one new formation for us, and only had a couple of new plays.  The kids adjusted to them pretty well.“

On scoring on the first play
“What happens, when something like that happens, is everybody lets their guard down.  I have seen it happen so many times.  It looks like it is going to be so easy that you don't go out with the same intensity.  I don't know that, that happened, but it generally does happen.  I loved that play, but I was frustrated with everything that happened between then until the end of the half.  That is stuff we will work on, and I don't want to dwell on it.  The first touchdown was huge, obviously, and they wanted to bring the heat and play Cover One, man-to-man.  When you do that you leave the middle open and that is what happened.”

On needed offensive improvements
“We just had to quit shooting ourselves in the foot.  We were all right.  We just had to settle down is all.”

On playing time of Freshman Marcus Burton
“If you notice he played at the end spot, I don't think he was inside on that play (interception for a touchdown).  He had a sack down here, when he was at defensive end.  When he decided to come here, we just couldn't pass up a guy like that.  He has proven to be everything that we thought he would be.”

On winning season opener
“Well, it is a new season.  Like I said at our first meeting, you have to win on the road and you have to beat some south teams.  This got us across both those lines.”

On whether he considers his defense dominating
“I'm never quick to say that.  We have had two shutouts, and played well today.  You have to look at Oklahoma State, they are struggling on offense.  They have even struggled in games that weren't against Big 12 teams.  So I guess you have to look at everything before you are able to say that.”

Colorado running back Hugh Charles
On breaking it open
“We told ourselves we were going to come out hard.  It is our first Big 12 game, my first Big 12 game and I wanted to show everyone what I had. It was an inside zone play, I read the cutback, almost got tripped up, kept my feet and broke away. It was wide open from the start, the safety was there, I just had to get passed him.”

On momentum from the start
“That first play was huge, any time you can get momentum like that, it is great.  We had to capitalize on the package because we knew what kind of team they were. We knew what would come because we practiced their defense, it was a matter of us executing our plays.”

On watching the defense
“Our defense kept the momentum going, especially keeping their offense from scoring.  It drives us to score even more when they do that because we know the defense is doing their job, we better do ours.“

Colorado quarterback Joel Klatt
On domination of the game
“I definitely expected us to come out here and win, but I give a lot of credit to our defense. they have been doing a great job all year and it showed today against a young offense. We jumped out to a lead after Hugh's run, our offense sputtered for a little bit, but then we were able to turn in on.”

On eliminating the “sputtering”
“It is the way it has been all year, we kill ourselves with penalties and mistakes. To our credit, we did not let that haunt us this game like it has in the past games. At half-time, we did not have to make many scheme adjustments, we just had to make sure everyone stayed focused and we had a good time doing it.”

On throwing the ball
“I felt like we could have made some more plays.  we did come out in the second half and make some, which gives us a little bit more confidence especially in man-to-man coverage. I was throwing the ball better down the field, and it is all these things that we need to build on.”

Colorado offensive lineman Brian Daniels
On offensive line
“Overall I think we did a good job of establishing the line.  We just have to cut out the mistakes.”

Colorado safety J.J. Billingsley
On being the best defense:
“I don't know about being the best, but I do know that this kind of play is what this defense expects.”

On keeping the shutout:
“It is always important for the team, especially the defense, to know that they can shut a team out.  The big stop on the goal line gives confidence no matter who is in the ball game.”

Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Gundy

On the game
“It is pretty easy to tell what happened out there today. Defensively, we played OK. I know our offense had so many three and outs, that it was hard for our defense to ever catch its breath. We never got momentum on offense. We needed to get first downs and sustain them. On special teams, I thought we played well with exception to the missed field goal.”

On Bobby Reid
“Bobby has got to play better. Bobby went through some growing pains today, and I am sure he would tell you that. He made some mistakes.”

On the loss
“For the first time this year, we are faced with some adversity. The sign of a true man is how you handle adversity. We will buckle down, put our nose to the grind stone and get back to work tomorrow.”

On the offense
“We have to continue with what we are doing. You have to be concerned with saying we are going to make wholesale changes after game four. We are not very good at what we are doing on offense, but in the long run we feel like it is going to give us the best chance to win games in the future. We just have to get better at it. Nobody want to put two tight ends in there and run play action pass more than me in the third quarter. It is just not the right thing to do.”

On Colorado
“I think Colorado is a good football team. I think they will probably have just as good a chance as anybody to win the North. Their system is in play and they know what they want to do on offense. They do the same thing on defense that they have done. They did not want to blitz Bobby much. They came after him on third and longs when he had his back against the wall.”

OSU cornerback Daniel McLemore

On the loss to Colorado
“Defensively, we were not playing very hard. In the second half, we started giving up a little bit. We can not get our heads down because we are 3-1. We just need to come back next week and play harder.”

On the Colorado offense
“Their offense is pretty good. They have a balanced offense. They run, pass and use the play action. I give them a lot of credit because they played well. As a defense, we need to step up more.”

OSU offensive tackle Charlie Johnson

 On the game against Colorado
“It is disappointing because we worked hard for two weeks to get better and try to get a win. It is sad, but we just have to move on.”

On the play of OSU's offense
“We have guys playing hard, but we are not making plays at critical times. The defense and special teams gave us plenty of opportunities, but we did not capitalize. We just need to get better for next week.”

OSU linebacker Paul Duren

On the loss to Colorado
“It is disappointing because we were prepared to win, but we did not go out there and execute.”

On the play of OSU's defense
“I think we played all right. If you do not win, you did not play well enough. We just have to get better and better each week.”
