Women's Tennis Takes 4-3 Win Over Sooners

April 23, 2005 | Tennis

BOULDER ? Freshman Gleisy Torres Torres performed her second straight clinching match at No. 6 lifting the University of Colorado women's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over No. 64 Oklahoma, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the South Campus Tennis Courts.

The win is CU's third straight, while Torres Torres claims her third victory of the spring as the decisive singles point helping the Buffaloes win on their final singles position. Torres Torres clinched 4-3 victories against Washington State (Feb. 3) and Kansas State (April 17).

“It was a hard fought win and Gleisy came through for us again,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “She's been in that situation before and I think she thrives on that pressure a little bit. It was a good win and it could have gone either way. Today was a good team effort.”

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 62 nationally improved to 10-10 overall and to 5-5 in the Big 12, while the Sooners fall to 14-11 and 4-7 in conference play. It was OU's third loss in their last four matches.

Trailing 1-0 after getting swept in the doubles competition, CU claimed singles points in four of the next six positions to defeat OU for the second straight year at home.

Lynzee Kever, Kendra Strandemo, Jessica Vanderdys all triumphed at the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 singles positions setting up Torres Torres' heroics at No. 6.

Oklahoma claimed straight set wins at No. 4 and No. 5.

Kever, Strandemo and Vanderdys each won their 15th match of the year. More impressively, Strandemo, a four-year standout from San Diego, also claimed her 69th career singles victory, the 14th women at CU to accomplish that feat.

Torres Torres won her 16th of the year and eighth of the dual season at No. 6.

The CU women close out the regular season portion of their schedule Sunday, April 24 against No. 35 Nebraska (17-2, 8-2) beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the South Campus Tennis Courts. In case of inclement weather, the match will be moved to the Ranch Country Club in Westminster starting at 4 p.m.
