Buffaloes Blank Aggies

BOULDER - Lawrence Vickers had three touchdowns to lead Colorado to a 39-0 win over New Mexico State, Saturday evening at Folsom Field.
Joel Klatt threw for 186 yards and two scores before being pulled in the third quarter. Vickers ran for two touchdowns and caught another for the Buffs, who improved to 2-0 and now take a week off before getting a much more stringent test, at No. 14 Miami.
The Aggies (0-2), under first-year coach Hal Mumme, were no threat to Colorado, even with the pass-happy offense that had Buffs coach Gary Barnett worrying all week.
New Mexico State quarterback Royal Gill finished 17-for-30 for 176 yards. The Aggies managed only 20 yards and one first down in the first half and Colorado took a 22-0 lead into an extended halftime that included a fireworks show.
Last week, New Mexico State called 70 pass plays and threw for 347 yards in a 34-17 loss to UTEP. But Colorado's defense was ready for the attack. The Aggies only ran 53 plays total and Gill didn't complete a pass longer than 15 yards until midway through the third quarter.
Gill's 54-yard completion to Paul Dombrowski in the third gave the Aggies the ball at CU's 26, but they fumbled the ball away two plays later.
Early in the fourth, New Mexico State had a 29-yard field goal blocked.
Later in the quarter, the Aggies got to the CU 1, but after a 5-yard loss, Gill threw a floater into the end zone that got intercepted, preserving CU's first shutout since 2002.
Other problems for the Aggies included an interception thrown on a fake punt and a safety that came when the snap flew well over punter Brad Evans' head and he booted the ball out of the end zone to make it 15-0.
Klatt marched CU 63 yards for a touchdown after the free kick, capped by a 3-yard pass to Vickers.
Sixth-year senior Quinn Sypniewski scored his first career touchdown, an 11-yard catch from Klatt for a 29-0 lead in the third. A bit later, Vickers ran in from the 11 to make it 36-0 and end the night for the CU starters. The Buffaloes made a team record 14 first downs in the third quarter. Hugh Charles finished with 105 yards for his second straight 100-yard game.
