January 18, 2006 | Tennis
BOULDER ? The University of Colorado women's tennis team successfully opened the spring season with a 7-0 shutout of visiting Air Force, 7-0, Wednesday night at the Harvest House. It was the opening match for both schools.
Colorado opened the season with a win for the second straight year (second time over USAFA) and the fourth time in their last five spring openers.
The Buffaloes took two of three doubles points for the single point win, then cruised to win all six singles slots for the final tally. All three of CU's nationally players won their matches with No. 39 Jessica Vanderdys having the toughest match winning in three sets, while No. 56 and freshman Monica Milewski and No. 84 sophomore Veera Nurmi cruised in straight sets.
Vanderdys won her 62nd career match (11-3 for the year) becoming the 17th CU woman to win that many matches in a career. Also reaching the victory plateau was Milewski, who won her 10th collegiate match of the year, followed by Nurmi, who won her 10th match of the 2005-06 season.
The Buffs rounded out the scoring with junior Martina Sedivec, freshman Ewa Losinski and Franziska Jendrian all winning in two sets from slots No. 4 through No. 6.
Losinski, CU's newest freshman from Australia, won her first collegiate match. Losinski just arrived on the Boulder campus within the week.
CU hosts in-state rival Denver (No. 52) Friday night, 7 p.m. at the Harvest House.
