Women's Tennis Wins Third Straight, Improve to 5-1

February 06, 2006 | Tennis

SPOKANE, Wash. ? The University of Colorado women's tennis team won their third straight match shutting out Gonzaga, 7-0, Sunday afternoon. The Buffaloes closed their two-match trip to the Pacific Northwest defeating Washington State on Saturday.

The Buffaloes improve to 5-1 and are the No. 41 nationally ranked tennis program in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings. The Zags fall to 0-5.

All six of CU's singles positions won in straight sets starting with No. 39 ranked Jessica Vanderdys at No. 1 singles. Vanderdys won her second in row and 65th career match with a 6-3, 6-3 winner. At No. 2, freshman Ewa Losinski remained unbeaten with her sixth straight victory with an easier 6-1, 6-0 decision; and at No.3, it was the same result and score for No. 84 Veera Nurmi, who won her third in a row.

In the later half of singles play, sophomore Gleisy Torres Torres saw her first action of the spring taking a 6-1, 6-1 winner for her seventh win of the year in nine outings; and at No. 5 Martina Sedivec broke a four-match losing streak and returned to the winners' circle for the sixth time this year with an easy 6-0, 6-1.

Rounding out of the singles play was senior Jenny Hanson collecting her first match victory of the spring and rolling to a 6-2, 6-1 winner.

Colorado wrapped up the team scoring sweeping both doubles slots at No. 1 and No. 2. Torres Torres and Vanderdys teamed up for the second time this dual season (both victories) with an 8-2 winner and at No. 2, Losinski and Nurmi won their second of the spring, also with an easy 8-3 tally.

“It was a great weekend of tennis with success on the road,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “We were able to overcome some adverse situations and are looking forward to playing Texas next Sunday.”

CU returns home to play No. 15 and 2005 NCAA Runner up Texas this Sunday at the Boulder Country Club. Doubles competition will begin at 10 a.m.
