No. 46 Women's Tennis Rallies Past Oklahoma, 4-3, Late Friday night

April 08, 2006 | Tennis

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? The University of Colorado women's tennis team fought back from losing the doubles point to win four of their next six singles slots to hold on and defeat the Oklahoma Sooners, 4-3, late Friday night in a match moved to the Willow Creek Indoor Facility in Oklahoma City after inclement weather in Norman. With the use of only three indoors courts, the match lasted over six hours.

With the victory, the Buffaloes improve to 10-6 overall and even their Big 12 record to 4-4, while Oklahoma falls to 7-12 and 1-6 in the conference. It was CU's first win over a Sooners team in Oklahoma since April 18, 1992, a span of five matches.

The match began with the doubles competition with OU winning the No. 1 and No. 3 slots. Monica Milewski and Franziska Jendrian teamed up at the No. 2 spot for an 8-5 win, their third win in five outings in Big 12 play.

Trailing 1-0, CU rallied in singles taking the next four of six positions with victories from their underclassmen, Milewski, Jendrian, Veera Nurmi and Martina Sedivec.

Coupled with their doubles loss and at the No. 1 singles slot, CU rallied from deficits of 1-0, 2-0 and 3-1 with their No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

Milewski won her 18th match of the year with a straight-set winner over Irina Lykina, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2, and Nurmi followed to narrow the deficit to 3-2, winning a three set match over Christi Baxley, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. It was Nurmi's team-best 21st win of the year and her eighth win out in nine matches.

From there the Buffaloes rallied with Jendrian, a freshman, and Sedivec, a junior at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Jendrian won her 16th of the year taking a come-from-behind victory over Chelsea Orr, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3; while Sedivec clinched the match with a straight-set win over Brittany Baldy, 6-3, 7-5. It was Sedivec's third victory in a row.

CU continues their tour of Oklahoma taking on the No. 59 ranked OSU Cowgirls on Sunday in another Big 12 Conference match up. The Buffaloes have not won in Stillwater since April 18, 1998.
