No. 53 CU Tennis Ends Skid, Downs Red Raiders, 6-1

LUBBOCK, Texas ? The University of Colorado tennis team broke a two-match losing streak and rebounded Saturday with a 6-1 winner over the Texas Tech Lady Red Raiders at the Lubbock Country Club in the Big 12 Conference opener for both schools.

Colorado, ranked No. 53 nationally improves to 4-2 and 1-0 in the conference, while Texas Tech, ranked No. 51, falls to 3-3 and 0-1.

The Buffaloes started the day claiming the doubles point, a scenario they have accomplished in their three other team victories. On this day, CU took two of three points as Camila Belassi and Gleisy Torres Torres defeated Fankam/Wagley, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles along with the No. 3 team of Franziska Jendrian/Martina Sedivec edging Jackson/Potgieter, 8-4.

Belassi/Torres Torres improved to a team best 5-1 at the top doubles spot, while Jendrian and Sedivec teamed up for its first win of the year.

Holding a 1-0 advantage heading into the singles round, CU continued to dominate the home team winning five of six singles slots for the Buffs' fourth triumph in five meetings against the Lady Red Raiders since 2003.

Colorado notched three consecutive wins at the No. 4, No. 3 and No. 1 positions. At No. 1, Monica Milewski, ranked No. 36 nationally, defeated Samantha van der Drift, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 for her fourth dual match victory and 13th of the year.

At No. 3, Veera Nurmi won her third spring match (ninth overall) defeating Janet Durham in straight-sets 6-2, 7-5; and at No. 4, Franziska Jendrian also won her fourth and 11th of the year sweeping Anne Sophie Fankam, 6-2, 6-2.

Rounding out the CU team victory was Torres Torres and Melisa Esposito.

Torres Torres defeated Kerryn Potgieter, 6-4, 6-3 for her fifth spring match and her team-leading 14th of the 2006-07 season; Esposito swept Maria Jose Andres 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 for her fourth win and sixth victory overall.

            CU returns to conference action against Iowa State on Feb. 24, then takes on non-conference opponent Northern Colorado the following day on Feb. 25. Both matches begin at 11 a.m. and will be played at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House Bubble.
