February 24, 2007 | Tennis

BOULDER ? The University of Colorado tennis team rolled to their fifth win in seven matches this dual season with a 7-0 blanking of Iowa State, Saturday afternoon at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House.

The 2-0 conference start is a CU first since the 2001 season and improves the Buffaloes to 5-2 overall.

Iowa State falls to 4-3 and 0-3 in the conference.

The Buffaloes had little trouble against the Cyclones taking their seventh straight victory over their conference opponents by winning the doubles points and securing a 1-0 lead.

CU started to roll beginning with its No. 42 doubles team of freshman Camila Belassi and junior Gleisy Torres Torres. The tandem improves 6-1 at No. 1 doubles this season by defeating Kara Hickey and Eve Soriano, 8-5.

At No. 2 doubles, sophomores Franziska Jendrian and Monica Milewski rolled to an 8-3 winner over Jill Palen and Caitlin Loprinzi. It was Jendrian/Milweski's seventh win this year and fifth of the dual season.

Rounding out the CU triumph in doubles was at No. 3 with Melisa Esposito and Martina Sedivec remaining unbeaten in two matches defeating Chrissy Derouin/Alyssa Palen, 8-6.

In singles, CU kept its momentum winning five of six singles slots in straight sets.

Milewski defeated Jill Palen 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 singles; at No. 2, Belassi edged Kara Hickey, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4; at No. 3, Veera Nurmi defeated Caitlin Loprinzi in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

At No. 4, Jendrian swept Alyssa Palen 6-2, 6-2; Torres Torres defeated Chrissy Derouin 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5 and at No. 6, Esposito upended Danielle Uscinski 6-1, 6-1.

Overall, Torres Torres won her team-best sixth win of the dual season, followed by Belassi, Esposito, Jendrian and Macey each winning their fifth victories. Nurmi tallied her fourth victory of the spring and 52nd for her career.

The win was head coach Nicole Kenneally's 80th career singles victory.

CU continues the weekend homestand on Sunday against in-state foe Northern Colorado beginning at 11 a.m.
