March 30, 2008 | Tennis

LUBBOCK, Texas ? Trailing 1-0 entering the singles competition, the University of Colorado women's tennis team rallied to win all six singles matches to defeat the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 6-1 Sunday afternoon in Big 12 Conference play.

The win improves the No. 67 ranked Buffaloes to 7-8 overall, more importantly a 4-1 record in the Big 12. Texas Tech falls to 9-7 overall and 2-3 in the conference. CU's win over TTU improves its record against the Red Raiders to 15-7, including three straight, and five of the last six. It's the first time this dual season the Buffaloes have lost the doubles point and rallied to win the match.

Senior Gleisy Torres Torres clinched the team victory at the No. 3 slot with a straight set win over Simone Templeton, 6-4, 6-2.  Torres Torres not only secured CU's seventh team victory of the spring, she won her 69th career singles match moving into a tie for 14th place on the school's all-time victories list. Torres Torres also broke a two-match skid and has now won six of her last eight.

Senior Veera Nurmi helped CU even the team score at one with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Janet Durham at No. 4. Nurmi's victory was her seventh of her last nine and moves her into 15th place on the school's all-time victory list with 68 singles wins.

The Buffaloes quickly took the lead on the scoreboard at No. 2, as sophomore Camila Belassi won her sixth of her last eight matches with a 6-3, 6-1 straight set win over Kelsy Garland. Junior Monica Milewski followed with another straight set winner 6-2, 6-1 over Samantha van der Drift at the No. 1 slot. It was Milewski's fifth win in her last seven matches.

CU added two more singles points at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots with junior Franziska Jendrian rebounding after dropping the first set and outlasting Kerryn Potgieter 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (11), and senior Victoria Almagno won her 10th match of the year defeating Maria Jose Andres, 7-6(8), 6-3. Jendrian has now won six of her last seven matches.

CU returns to Boulder to close out the home season Friday, April 4 (Texas) and Sunday, April 6 (Texas A&M) at the South Campus Courts. The match with the Longhorns begins at 2 p.m. and the match with the Aggies begins at 10 a.m. In case of inclement weather, matches will be moved inside the Millennium Hotel Harvest House.
