Tennis Sweeps Iowa State, 7-0

April 11, 2008 | Tennis

AMES, Iowa ? The University of Colorado tennis team swept all three doubles and six singles matches cruising to a 7-0 victory over the Iowa State University Cyclones, Friday afternoon at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center.

The win halts a two-match losing skid for the Buffaloes and continues their dominance over the Cyclones winning for the ninth straight time and 27th triumph in 29 matches since 1981. CU improves to 8-10 overall and 5-3 in the Big 12 Conference, while ISU falls to 4-11 overall and 0-8 in the conference.

CU dominated from the start with sophomore Camila Belassi and junior Monica Milewski sweeping all eight points at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Melisa Esposito and junior Franziska Jendrian secured the No. 2 slot with an 8-2 winner, as did freshman Abbie Probert and senior Gleisy Torres Torres at No. 3.

Belassi/Milewski won their sixth spring match; Esposito/Jendrian broke a four-match skid for their seventh win of the dual season; and Probert/Torres Torres won their team-best 10t match of the spring, 13th for the year.

In singles, CU tallied up six more points winning five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Six of CU's eight team wins during the spring season have been by 7-0 shutouts.

Senior Veera Nurmi etched her name in the school record book winning her 70th career singles match blanking Chrissy Derouin, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Nurmi joins fellow teammate Gleisy Torres Torres as the fourth student-athlete in this decade to eclipse the 70-win plateau.

Torres Torres also moved up the all-time wins list with her straight set victory and now sits in 13th place tie with 71 victories.

With a 3-0 lead, the Buffaloes continued rolling along with Milewski taking a 7-6(0), 6-1 winner over Erin Karonis at No. 1 singles; Esposito defeated Liza Wischer in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5; and Franziska Jendrian defeated Reka Kelemen, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6.

A CU quartet also picked up their sixth conference win in eight singles matches. Belassi, who defeated Kara Hickey, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2, won her sixth, along with Jendrian, Nurmi and Torres Torres. Milewski and Esposito also earned their fifth and four wins, respectively.

The Buffaloes continue their current road trip at No. 67 Nebraska on Sunday, April 13 for a 10 a.m. start.
