Tennis Tops No. 38 UNLV, 4-3

January 31, 2009 | Tennis

PALO ALTO, Calif. ? Junior Camila Belassi clinched the University of Colorado tennis team's 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the UNLV Rebels, Saturday afternoon.

More than a few occasions in her match, Belassi rallied from a set down, then rallied in the final set from a 5-2 deficit, then subsequently won her final match in a tie-breaker, 7-4.

The exciting team victory improves CU's record to 3-2, while UNLV drops to 3-2.

“I think it was an incredible effort, we were down 3-0 and we got back to three-all,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “A tremendous effort all around, it is tough to come back against a good team like UNLV but the effort and fight that the girls put out was great, I was very pleased with how the girls fought.”

The Buffs couldn't secure the doubles point as UNLV's Kristina Nedeltcheva and Katy Williams took an 8-5 victory over Belassi and Melisa Esposito. UNLV followed with Alisa Razina and Anna Maskaljun's win over Franziska Jendrian and Ania Anuszkiewicz, 8-6 at No. 2.

In singles play, the Buffs found themselves trailing 3-0 after falling at the No.1 and No. 5 singles positions.

Sophomore Abbie Probert started the winning momentum with her victory over Maskaljun, while Jendrian took a 6-4, 6-2 winner against Katy Williams for her 77th career singles victory. Jendrian's victory moves her into a seventh place tie with Karen Myers (1985-89).

Freshman Michala Hedelund Jensen evened the match at 3-3 after defeating Rumyana Terzieva, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 6 slot setting up Belassi's heroics at No. 2 defeating Nikol Dimitrova for her 47th career singles victory.

Colorado will continue their road trip at New Mexico on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. (MST).
