Colorado-West Virginia Notes

October 01, 2009 | Football

Quickly Colorado is 1-3 on the season and has wrapped up non-league play ... After playing on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, CU's next five games are back on the traditional Saturday ... CU is now 7-21 all-time in games played in the Eastern Time Zone, now dropping eight straight; the last win was at Michigan in 1994 (yes, "The Catch") ... CU is now 13-4 on October 1 ... Dan Hawkins' teams are now 2-2 (1-1 at CU) on Thursday night games (all on ESPN) ... Colorado is now 3-1 in regular season Thursday night games played in its history (others: W vs. Stanford, 1990; W at Missouri, 1992; W vs. WVU last year) ... Colorado is still perfect in the red zone in 2009 (12-of-12), as the Buffs didn't have a chance tonight (all four scores from outside the zone---36, 29 and 20 yard TDs and the 39-yard FG) ... West Virginia is 11-3 since losing in Boulder last year, CU is 3-10 since that game ... Noel Devine (20-220) is the first player to rush for over 200 yards against CU since North Texas' Jamario Thomas rushed for 247 in Boulder on Sept. 18, 2004 ... WR Markques Simas made his first career reception and also had his first career TD, the latter the 20-yard catch with :03 remaining ... Colorado had 10 penalties last time against Wyoming, but cut that in half tonight to five, not committing one until 7:55 remained in the third quarter ... 12 of CU's 21 first downs were earned on third (10) and fourth (2) down ... CU ran 84 plays tonight and 84 last month at Toledo; that makes 18 games this decade (out of 127) that CU has run 80 or more plays; the most in a single season was four in 2001 ... Each team scored in every quarter in the game.

WR SCOTTY MCKNIGHT (9-98, 1 TD) set the school record for the most consecutive games catching at least one pass with 28, breaking the old mark of 27 set by Charles E. Johnson between 1991 and 1993; including the 2007 Independence Bowl, McKnight has caught a pass in every collegiate game he has played (28); Johnson's streak including bowls was 29 (CU is one of a handful of schools that does not include bowl stats for such records). He moved into ninth all-time in receiving yards at CU (1,332); he vaulted past Mike Pritchard (1,241) and Dusty Sprague (1,261) tonight; he also jumped Monte Huber (111 receptions) into seventh all-time on that list, as he now has 118.

TB RODNEY STEWART (21-105, 1 TD) Stewart had his fifth 100-yard career game, his second in a row and second against West Virginia. The 36-yard run in the first quarter was also the longest rush of his career, besting a 22-yard run at Kansas last October.

QB CODY HAWKINS (52-27-3, 292, 2 TD) He moved into third place all-time at Colorado in passing yards, as he now has 5,630; he moved by Koy Detmer (5,390, 1992-96) tonight. He is within one of the school's all-time mark for TD passes as he now had 43; Joel Klatt had 44 between 2002-05, and he's also with one of the polar opposite, interceptions; he now is tied for third with 32, trailing Klatt and Steve Vogel (1981-84), who both had 33.

TE RIAR GEER (8-113, 0 TD) matched a career high in receptions (previous: 7 at Georgia, 2006).
