March 27, 2011 | Tennis
BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by the Iowa State Cyclones on Sunday at the South Campus Courts.
The victory for Iowa State ends a four match slide, improving their record to 10-8 overall and 1-3 in Big 12 play. Colorado has now lost eight matches in a row, dropping their record to 3-11 overall and 0-4 in the conference. The Buffs eight straight losses is their longest such streak in team history.
"It was good to be back at home," said Colorado head coach Nicole Kenneally, whose team has played six of their last seven matches on the road. "We played a more competitive match today, and we definitely had our looks at different sets and matches. We have to continue to work hard and believe in what we are doing. We have played a lot of good teams and that can be tough when you take the losses, but this will only make us stronger and will allow us to grow as competitors."
Junior Michala Hedelund Jensen and freshman Carla Manzi Tenorio picked up the only singles victories for the Buffaloes on the day. Jensen defeated ISU's Tessa Lang 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (6) in No. 3 singles while Tenorio defeated Jenna Langhorst 6-2, 6-2 in No. 5 singles. The singles victory is Tenorio's second in as many matches while Jensen ends a four match losing streak in singles play with her win.
The Cyclones took the early lead in the match by winning the doubles point 2-1. CU's only victory in doubles play came in No. 3 doubles in which freshman Winde Janssens and Tenorio defeated Langhorst and Liza Wischer 8-7 (4).
ISU took a 2-0 lead in the match after Maria Macedo defeated senior Abbie Probert 6-3, 6-0 in No. 2 singles, but CU battled back and cut the Cyclones lead to one with Tenorio's victory in the No. 5 spot. Tenorio's win was as close as Colorado came to ISU as the Cyclones won the next three singles matches to claim the overall victory. Jensen's win came in the final match to conclude on the day.
Colorado will look to get back into the win column in their next match on Friday Apr. 1 at 2 p.m. against Oklahoma State in Boulder.
