LAWRENCE, Kan. - On the strength of winning the doubles point and five of six singles positions, the University of Kansas women's tennis team defeated the Colorado Buffaloes, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
The Jayhawks have won three of their last four matches and improve to 9-9 overall (3-5 in Big 12 play), while the Buffaloes dropped only their second match to KU in Lawrence in the 15-year history of conference play (the other , 1997).
CU (3-14, 0-7) falls for the 11-straight time, the longest losing streak in school history. The loss keeps the Buffs winless in conference play.
KU also breaks a five-match losing streak against the Buffs defeating CU for the first time since the 2006 season and lead the all-time series, 25-17. CU led in Big 12 head-to-head matches, 13-9.
Winde Janssens was the lone Buff securing a point rallying from a set down to claim to three-set winner over Erin Wilbert, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. It was Janssens third singles win in four matches when playing three sets. The freshman from Peer, Belgium won for the ninth time in 2010-11 and achieved her team-best third Big 12 Conference victory.
In other singles play, senior Abbie Probert and junior Michala Hedelund Jensen each won their opening set against their respective opponent, however lost in three sets. Probert took her opening set 7-5 over Paulina Los at No. 3, however lost 6-2, 7-5. Hedelund Jensen won her opening set 6-3 against Monica Pezzotti, then fell 6-3, 6-2.
Although CU did not claim the doubles point, Hedelund Jensen and junior Ania Anuszkiewicz teamed up together for the first time this year taking an 8-3 win at No. 2 over Erin Wilbert/Victoria Khanevskaya, 8-3. It was Hedelund Jensen's 41st career doubles tally; Anuszkiewicz won her 32nd career doubles win.
The Buffaloes return to Boulder for a three-match homestand with No. 39 Texas Tech (Friday, April 15, 2 p.m.), No. 9 Baylor (Sunday, April 17, 11 a.m.), and their final home match against No. 38 Nebraska (Wednesday, April 20, 2 p.m.).
