Tennis Drops Match to No. 65 LSU

January 22, 2012 | Tennis

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's tennis team couldn't make it two wins in a row playing for the second time in three days, falling to No. 65 LSU, 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House.

CU defeated Air Force late Friday night, 4-2, and played its second match of the young season falling to the No. 65 ranked Lady Tigers on Sunday. It was LSU's season opener, in addition to returning a home-and-home match with the Buffaloes from a year ago. LSU defeated CU in Baton Rouge, 6-1 last year and has now won all five meetings with CU.

"We didn't get the result we wanted in regards to a win, but we continue to see progress," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. "Playing a SEC team before we go against our Pac-12 matchups is only going to help, and playing a team like LSU this early in the season will allow us to use this match to see what we are doing well and what to keep working on."

The Buffs did reach the winners circle once on the day as the No. 3 doubles team of senior Ania Anuszkiewicz and redshirt-sophomore Erin Sanders defeated Kaitlin Burns and Ariel Morton, 8-4.  Anuszkiewicz/Sanders picked up their first win as a duo in five matches played together (0-3 in the fall). It was also Anuszkiewicz's 37th career doubles win, ranking No. 31 all-time at CU.

CU freshman Julyette Steur played the only three set match on the day rallying from a first set tie-breaker loss 7-6 (7-4), to win the second, 6-1, only to fall 6-3 in the final set to Kaitlin Burns at No. 3.  Steur made her collegiate debut on Friday picking up a singles win in straight sets, along with a doubles win with teammate Winde Janssens at No. 2.

CU (1-1) travels to Houston for a pair of non-conference matches against the Cougars (Saturday, Jan. 28) and against Stephen F. Austin (Jan. 29). The Buffs return home to play Colorado State on Feb. 11 at the Meadows Club in Boulder.
