BOULDER
- The University of Colorado tennis team extended its home winning streak to
three with Monday's 5-2 victory over Northern Arizona.
"We competed in nine positions," CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "We
definitely need to make sure that we always have nine positions show up. I
think today we did a great job. I'm not sure we were as sharp as we have been,
but we had a lot of fight and a lot of determination. I'm really proud of how
we came out and competed because you've always got to come out and compete in
nine positions."
The Buffaloes started strong by winning the doubles point for the sixth time
this season. Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio refuse to lose, improving
their spring record to a perfect 8-0 with their 8-4 win over Doballah/Perez.
Julyette Steur and Erin Sanders also shined, defeating Stone/Vang 8-5 and
extending their win streak to five.
Steur and Janssens also stood out in singles play. Steur leads the Buffs with a
team-high 11 wins in the 2012-13 season (tied with Manzi Tenorio). All but one
of her six wins this spring have been in straight sets. Janssens is riding a
four-match winning streak, falling just once this spring. Her victory ended Johanna
Vang's career-best six-match win streak.
Sanders and Manzi Tenorio also won in straight sets, battling through
tiebreakers. Down 5-6 in the first set, Sanders fought back, and claimed the
tiebreak and the win over Malia Wahinepio. Manzi Tenorio won her first set
against Alice Pacaut 6-4. She fell behind 2-5 in the second, but forced an epic
tiebreaker. Manzi Tenorio said her opponent wouldn't give up, but neither would
she. Though she dropped three match point opportunities, she also fought off
seven NAU set points. At 16-14, Manzi Tenorio earned the tiebreaker and the
win.
Colorado concludes the week against Wyoming and Princeton. The Buffs end the
month with a trip Laramie, Wyo. on Thursday, Feb. 28. First serve is at 10:30
a.m. They return to Boulder to begin a three-match home stand beginning with
Princeton at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 2. Saturday's matches are scheduled to be
held at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House, depending on weather conditions.
