SAN DIEGO – The Colorado Buffaloes tennis team will head to Southern California Friday, Nov. 6, through Sunday, Nov. 8, for the San Diego State Invitational, marking the Buffs' final team appearance of the fall season.
Six Buffs are set to compete, with Lera Alexin and Ema Bubalo returning to the court for the first time since the duo earned a bid to the NCAA Individual Championships during ITA Mountain Regionals in October.
"It's the last tournament of the fall for most of the team," CU Head Coach Anthony Pham said. "For the whole group, this is the first time they're going to be competing together since regionals, and they obviously have been working hard this fall. So I know they're excited to hopefully end the fall on a good note as we go into the off season."
Joining Alexin and Bubalo, Willow Gretsch, Heidi Crncan, Pia Rebec and Louise Ternstroem will compete in both singles and doubles play, with several familiar opponents awaiting the Buffs.Â
Ternstroem will meet Denver's Paulina Jurkowska in singles play, the England native who her and Rebec defeated in doubles play at both NCAA Regionals and the Colorado Cup earlier this season. Jurkowska will also compete in doubles, taking on Alexin and Bubalo as the Colorado pair prepares for the NCAA Individual Championships beginning Nov. 17.
"They'll get some good opportunities to compete and prepare themselves for the NCAA tournament, which will be just 10 days later," Pham said.Â
Alexin, Bubalo and Crncan will each face UC San Diego opponents in singles play, while Rebec and Ternstroem will take on the Tritons in doubles competition. Rebec will also meet a Stanford opponent in singles play.
Crncan and fourth-year Buff Willow Gretsch, a California native and graduate of de Toledo High School in Los Angeles, will face Colorado State's Diana Lizarazo and Leyla Tozin in doubles play. The two teams previously met in a closely contested match earlier this season, giving the Buffs another opportunity against familiar opponents.
With friends, family and teammates cheering her on, Gretsch will look to make the most of her return to California. The senior will also face Denver's Yunfei Cai in singles play, revisiting another familiar opponent from the Colorado Cup, where Cai was part of a doubles pairing that narrowly defeated Gretsch and Crncan.
"I am so happy to be close to home again," Gretsch said. "My family and friends will also come and watch which is so incredibly lucky"
Play is guaranteed for the full duration of the three tournament and live updates will be available on cubuffs.com and @cubuffstennis on Instagram.
