Tennis Competing At Wild West Shootout
October 31, 2014 | Tennis
DENTON, Texas – University of Colorado freshman Tina Bokhua was the lone winner for the Buffaloes on day one of the Wild West Shootout featuring four other schools at the Waranch Tennis Center on the campus of North Texas University in Denton.
The shootout features four singles and two doubles brackets, featuring eight players/teams in each.
Bokhua won her third match of the fall season out of four matches played with a straight set winner over North Texas senior Kseniya Bardabush, 6-3, 6-4 in the Green Singles Bracket. All three of Bokhua's victories this fall have come in straight sets.
The Wild West Shootout is the third of four fall tournaments for the Buffaloes in 2014. They are also joined by the host Mean Green, Air Force, Stephen F. Austin, and UT Arlington.
“It was a disappointing day to start out the Wild West shootout tournament,” assistant tennis coach Blake Mosley said. “We didn't adjust well to the slower courts and windy conditions. One bright spot was Tina, defeating UNT's number one player (Kseniya Bardabush) in straight sets. We'll reset tomorrow and focus on controlling what we can and not dwell on the negative.”
CU came up short in the doubles rounds as Bokhua and senior Ashley Tiefel fell to UT-Arlington's Elizabeth Thoms and Ekaterina Tugarinova, 8-6 in the Green Doubles opening match, as did, Alexandra Aiello and Nuria Ormeño Ruiz to Arlington's Jessica Birowski and Augustina Serio, 8-4 in the White Doubles bracket.
In singles, it was a day of near-misses for the rest of the CU team as Aiello, Ormeño Ruiz, Tiefel, and Vitaliya Alkhovik, all lost in straight sets.
Saturday's play will be another round of singles and doubles with Sunday being the final day featuring the main draw finals and consolation rounds.
The Buffaloes are playing this weekend without senior Julyette Steur and freshman Kyra Wojcik, as the pair are practicing and resting in Boulder for next week's 2014 USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. from November 6-9. The CU pair earned the Mountain Region automatic berth winning the doubles bracket Oct. 19 in Albuquerque.
Steur and Wojcik are a combined 9-3 on the singles court this fall season, while a combined 12-0 in doubles.
