Albuquerque, N.M. – University of Colorado juniors Julyette Steur and Alex Aiello each won singles points, however the host Lobos claimed the doubles point and four of six singles slots as New Mexico took a 5-2 win over the No. 54 ranked Buffaloes, Friday afternoon at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.
New Mexico breaks a four-match losing streak on the season and a four-match skid to CU, improving to 6-5 on the season. The Buffaloes see their three-match winning streak come to an end falling to 6-4. UNM improves its head-to-head series advantage against CU, 17-15.
“Hats off to New Mexico, they played a great match,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “They were better in the close matches. Over the course of nine matches, six singles and three doubles, when an opponent does that, they usually walk away with the win.
"We play a very good team in Ball State on Sunday and have an opportunity to rebound and learn from tonight's match.”
CU which made the second biggest jump in the nation into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings on Monday after defeating a pair of ranked teams at home last weekend, lost a hard-fought doubles match as the home team escaped taking two of three matches.
The team of Steur and junior Ashley Tiefel edged Dominique Dulski and Emily Olivier, 8-6. It was Steur/Tiefel's third straight win and the duo has won a team-best 11matches.
In singles, CU managed two singles wins with Steur and Aiello each winning in straight sets.
Steur won her fourth straight and her eighth match at the No. 1 singles position, defeating Michaela Bezdickova, 6-2, 6-4.
At No. 2, Aiello defeated Lizette Blankers, 6-3, 6-1, breaking a personal two-match skid to win her team-leading 18th win of the season. It was also her eighth win of the spring campaign, tying her with Steur for the team lead.
Colorado continues its stay in the Land of Enchantment taking on Ball State Sunday at 10 a.m.
