Tennis Improves To 2-0, Defeats Air Force

January 31, 2015 | Tennis

COLORADO SPRINGS – The University of Colorado women's tennis team made it two-for-two against the state of Colorado opponents in a week's time defeating the United States Air Force Academy, 5-2, Friday evening.

The win improves the Buffaloes 2015 spring record to 2-0 after shutting out Northern Colorado, 7-0 last Saturday in Greeley. The Falcons drop to 1-2 on the season.

"The women's tennis team would like to send our deepest sympathy to Kyle (MacIntosh) and his family. They were in our thoughts today and dedicated this win to him,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally.

“As for the match, one and two doubles came through strong for us and they really played well in tough situations. In singles, we took care of business and it was good to get the win. Saturday's home opener against Kansas State will be a tough match and we're looking foward to our home opener on Saturday."

Colorado did what they did against the Bears last week, winning the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. The visitors took two of three matches as senior Julyette Steur and Tina Bokhua evened their spring record at 1-1 and they edged Tracy Landram and Mary Meyers, 6-4 at the top doubles spot.
CU also took the No. 2 slot with senior Ashley Tiefel and junior Alex Aiello defeating Natasha Rizvi and Jocelle Rudico, 6-3. The win for Tiefel/Aiello was their second this season and improves their overall record on the year to 6-3.

In singles, the Buffs dominated winning four of singles positions in straight sets. Bokhua defeated Mary Meyers, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 for her sixth win of the year and sophomore Nuria Ormeño Ruiz swept Chloe Forlini, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 for her sixth win on the season.

Steur, playing the No. 1 singles spot for the first time this spring, clinched the match winning her eighth of the season as she defeated Natasha Rizvi, 6-4, 6-3. It was Steur's second straight clinching match win.

Steur's pair of wins on Friday improves her all-time record to 95 victories (51 singles, 44 doubles). Her 51st singles tally moves her into a tie at No. 30 all-time and in doubles, her 44th win moves her in the No. 25 place.

CU rounded out the team scoring securing its fifth point as Aiello edged Lily Forlini, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5. It was Aiello's eighth singles win of the year and 27th career singles tally.

Air Force took singles points at No. 4 and No. 6.

Friday's match at Air Force is the first of three straight tennis matches for the Buffaloes this weekend. On Saturday, CU opens the home season against former Big 12 Conference foe Kansas State at 4 p.m. at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House. The Wildcats (2-1) enter the match as the No. 66 nationally ranked team.

On Sunday, CU travels to in-state rival Colorado State for 2 p.m.
